S54 Engine Swap

Guys-

I have the opportunity to purchase an S54 with SMG trans and am considering installing this combo in my 2002 325 touring.

Can someone who has performed an S54 swap into another e46 please provide me with a list of must haves regarding major parts?

Beside the complete motor, DME, harness and gauge cluster is there anything elese that is considered essential to make this swap complete?

Thanks in advance!

Do a search I forget who it was but he has a 323 with the M3 SMG and S54 and a VERY VERY nice detailed write up.

Thanks guys. I did do a search and found the thread from MITE46 and have begun to digest the massive amount of data. Unfortunately I did not find an easy to comprehend list of main assemblies and electronics. There were also many parts on that engine that were detailed in the thread.

I would like a summary of major items to make sure I secure most items during initial purchase and negotiations.

Thanks!

I would suggest sending a PM to MITE46. I doubt there's many others with the knowledge he has and that'd probably be your best chance of getting the info you want.

Hi,

Besides what you mentioned:

Radiator water reservoir with Airpump
SMG Shifter
Oil Cooler
Radiator
M3 fuel filter with fuel regulator
M3 fuel pump (2 units)
SMG Getrag Controller
Keys+EWS and preferably steering column with steering angle sensor.
Suspension, front and rear including differential, driveshaft, guibo..etc.
Airbag module that would fit the harness (mine was Temic, M3's was Bosch)
Round steering wheel airbag
M3 steering wheel with SMG paddles
SteeringColumnSwitch 61318379091 SMG slip ring for Paddles comes with 2 extra pins

Inspect the harness:
If DSC connector has 47 pins (later M3s equipped with Teves MK60 like harness in MITE46's S54 into E30 transplant) then you'll need:

- 2 sensors part numbers: 34526764018 (DSC sensor under driver's seat) and 37146770204 (accelerating sensor under passenger's seat)
- DSC hydro unit, installed in engine compartment @driver's side below brake booster.

If the DSC (ABS) connector has 43 pins (M3's from 2001 to 9/2002 -Teves MK20 like the harness in MITE46's S54 into 323 transplant.) then you'll need:
- 3 sensors
- DSC Hydro unit installed in the engine compartment, passenger's side.
- precharge pump installed at driver's side below the brake booster.

4 speed sensors installed at each wheel accodring to your brake system.

I could be missing something...as suggested earlier in this thread, MITE46 is your best reference.

Are you doing this on your own or at a garage?

sounds lke it would be a bit easier swapping s54 with manual transmission.

oh add the AirIntake box with MAF too.

Well if you want it done right, make it as close as possible to an M3, then even if you're going with a manual stick shift you should get the dynamic stability system of an M3 working to properly control that power.
Only with SMG you 'must' get it to work.
I do agree that a manual transmission swap can be easier.

If I remember correctly, Rogue Engineering did the S54 into a Touring a year or so ago, and was written up in Bimmer and / or Roundel. Give them a call............

demos70,

Thanks for the informative response. I will send your list of must haves on to the seller and learn if he can easily accomodate the list of items you provided to me.

Not sure if want to bother with the S54 and be constrained by all the expensive factory electronics or simply boost a less complicated and less expensive 3.0 liter. I could always add a piggy back setup to enrich the fuel map or go standalone and have complete control of engine management.

I have finished reading all of MITE46's thread and unfortunately I am not as well connected with a dealer who will let me use the diagnostic equipment for free and sell me parts at cost.

And yet another prospective S54 swapper bites the dust

If you don't want to deal with a full swap, you could always go the 3.2 conversion route and boost it. A lot cheaper I would imagine.

is that just stroke?

or is it honing and stroke combined to reach that displacement?

My ride had the M54 3.0 liter engine. IMHO the swap is worth the trouble.
For the missing parts, Pacific BMW already gives 15% off compared to other sites I've seen. You're lucky you're in the States you can get parts shipped easily.
As for GT1, there's a version floating on the net that works either standalone or under vmware.
The interface is sold on several sites about 1000-1500$.
http://www.passthruxs.com/order.htm

A quote from http://www.asaultimatebuyersguide.co...ompany=INFOCAR :

"Access www.bmwtechinfo.com and www.volvotechinfo.com and you will see that Actia's Pass-thru is the only factory approved device. Actia also has a deal with BMW in Germany in which Multi-Di@g users can access www.bmwtechinfo.com to convert to to a GT1 factory tool."

There are also companies that sell cloned GT1s on IBM T30 laptops with the yellow multiplexer, prices start from 5500$. Maybe you can check your local shops and try to rent one. Or go to a shop that has one and use it with your laptop. Some googling will show you how to install XP embeded Progman-SSSv2.1 or SSSv2.3 on a PC. Some registery editing and a cracked dll is involved.
You can also download (and will need) BMW's WDS for wiring diagrams and TIS for torques and mechanical stuff.

How much is the seller asking btw? If it's a good price I think you'd be better off buying new parts than have him dig around for used ones and raising his price. Whether you go for the swap or not is up to you, how much you're willing to pay, wait, and learn. Good luck.

I'm not sure, though I'd imagine just like between 2.5 and 3.0, it's just stroke. May wanna find someone who has that setup to confirm.

M3 touring would be hot...maybe you can just do a SC, BBK, and upgraded suspension to get M3-like performance.
