The E46 sedan IMO is just one of those cars that was always ugly. It looked dated even when it FIRST came out. In fact a 2005 e46 sedan... which is only a couple of years old, could easily pass for a 10 year old car. I think those hideous non-body-colored strips make half the difference. On cars that have them painted body color the sedan does look a little better.

The coupe is obviously the better looking of the two (and for most cars that have a coupe/sedan option), but is also obviously not as practical. Generally speaking, one buys the sedan for practicality, and the coupe for looks.

And of course the face lifted models look beter than the non-facelifted models (um, why would BMW intentionally make their cars look worse???).

The Facelift coupe was made for women.

How am I jealous I have a facelift sedan? And for the record I think all stock e46 coupes look pretty boring save for the M3.

Sedan...ditto to the kids getting in the back seat...married, so no back-seat-sex...Or, no sex for that matter.

I always thought the Coupe looked sexier than the sedan. I never really was happy with my 328i and finally changed it in for the 323ci.

Sedan, FTW. Stock-for-stock, the body lines and shape flow better in my opinion. The coupe seems to drag on and seems bland on certain side angles.

On the flip-side, the coupe edges the sedan in looks when modded...but not by much.

I had a choice between a '01 330ci 3.5 years ago, or my '99 328i. I'm very glad I bought the sedan!

Hard to say with the E46, the majority of modded non-M cars Ive seen have been sedans. And usually those are the cars that have been modified in a cleaner way. That said Ive always been a coupe guy and thats what Im into.

I have always thought the sedan was more attractive. Also agree that the coupe has a more feminine look.
