Control Arm Ball Joint Info

Here's some interesting stuff I found in the TIS -

In the first document there's a nice diagram of the ball joint itself and some good background information on how it works and how it wears out.

The next two documents describe the use of BMW's special tool for measuring play in the joint. You're not likely to buy one of these tools and be doing it yourself, but it's always nice to know what the shop is up to.

The joint check pdf seems to discuss a method that does not involve the special BMW tool, but it does not say what that method is. The measuring play pdf seems to involve the BMW tool.

Any idea what the other method is?
