Water Pump

So I replaced my water pump after it failed at about 100k miles (About 6 months ago). Earlier today, it failed again in the same way, with the impeller breaking off of the shaft. The pump probably only had about 5000 miles on it. It was an off-the-shelf Advance Auto Parts water pump, but it seems unreasonable for it to have failed so soon. What other problems could I have that would cause this premature failure? Or could it have just been bad luck?

On the bright side, it only took me about half an hour to replace the pump and bleed the coolant. It's a little sad that I have the process down so well.

Yes, buythe water pump with the metal impelers. it might cost a little more but it won't break on you in 5000 miles.

Try www.KOPerformance.com they have great prices on OE and OEM stuff. I just did my water pump along with my whole cooling system. You can check out what I did if you search, cooling system overhaul. I also listed out prices that I paid for everything.

FWIW, here's the short history of E36/E46 water pumps:
* The E36 started with a reddish-brown plastic impeller which would self destruct
* The E36 then switched to metal impeller, but that proved too heavy for the existing bearings causing a high failure rate
* Late model E36's and E46's finally went to the current black/grey "composite" impeller design, which basically solved the problem, or has at least made the water pump no more prone to failure than any other OEM pump.

Metal impeller doesn't mean a whole lot. The first one was metal, and failed catastrophically. While I'm sure its far more durable than the cheap Advance pump, I think the OE style pump is gonna be far more destructive when it does fail. Regardless, I'll be replacing it again with something that will last a little longer, I just wanted to hear that I didn't have any other problem that might cause premature failure.

I'll probably end up gong that route for peace of mind. I haven't heard anything bad about those pumps. On the other hand, the Advance pump has a lifetime warranty too... haha
