Do you think SMG is a manual or automatic?
Do you think the SMG that comes in the M3 an automatic transmission, a manual transmission, or a special type of transmission.

I would say "special" or hybrid lol.
IMO, clutch pedal = manual ; no clutch pedal = no manual |

Seriously, it's such an old, tired subject. I'm half tempted to close the thread, but then I'll have to deal with the firestorm of complaints afterwords.

Haha, I was hoping to keep it all on one thread and keep it from ruining other threads, kinda like the sacrificial lamb of the forum.
I'm kinda split between a category of it's own and a manual. I mean, in my neighbor's race car, the gearbox allows you to shift up and down without using the clutch pedal. What's the difference between that and an SMG in manual mode? Both require just a flick of the wrist. Also the fact you can convert a manual to an SMG and SMG to a manual. This is ridiculous. I suggest you guys do a lot of reading before you go on talking about how it is automatic.
You need to know something before you can say something. Just / Thread It's been discussed too many times

if it's not an auto, then i want you do to this go sit at the light, put your SMG in gear, don't use any brakes, no parking brake either, and rev the engine, control your clutch like a manual see how much control you have ![]() a manual is a manual, any other version that has no clutch pedal, no control=automatic duuuuh have you even driven a stick in your whole life? (you should, gti is stick) you'd know the difference |

How about a better question -
would there be less M3 drivers if there was no SMG? because the smg can be used by grandmas and with little training? |

they say that SMGs help sales so that people not familiar with 5/6 manual transmissions have the ability to drive it.

SMG is a semiautomatic tranny (mentioned multiple times in F1 races)... there, we can now put this to rest (where's the :false-hope: smiley?)

Also, many race cars don't have a clutch. Even though they still have the H pattern gear selector. Some race cars don't even have a clutch or the normal H-style gear selector but instead just a front-back shift lever. Do you consider those automatics? |

i'm talking about being in gear and reving, playing with the friction zone, requiring actual skill to stop/start on a hill, double clutching when you need to have some fun, etc. smg is definitely for people that don't know how to drive stick, going by who buys them not why it was developed... |

It is a sequential manual transmission, anyone in the racing field will tell you it's a manual. It's not an automatic, and it's not "it's own category". These transmissions have been around for a long time, and are considered manuals.
It has a clutch and flywheel, and no torque converter. That defines a manual for me. The clutch is controlled by hydraulics and not my left foot. The SMG may not be the best of the breed of sequential manuals, but it still is a manual. The future is the dual-clutch sequentials, which BMW will replace the SMG with.
