when you break SMG down to it's components, it's manual (by form). But functionally, you drive with just the two pedals and don't have to change gears if you don't want - that makes it automatic (by function).
Because of it's mixed form and function (and really all sequential manuals, i.e. porsche, audi/vw DSG, and SMG) are in a category of their own. This topic has been e-battled to death on here - can we move on??
