3M or Avery SIlver trim for Sedan Black Mouldings DIY

3m Trim or Avery ?

Hey Guys,

Somebody mentioned that there was a better match to the 3M Silver tape (3M ScotchCAL ElectroCut Satin Aluminum 7125-120) so I ventured to find out....

I just came back from my local printshop in Vancouver and went through all the Avery swatch cards. It seems the perfect match for my Titanium Silver 2002 325xi is this:

High Performance Opaque Series Averygraphics
Silver Shimmer A9069-O (Pantone 877C)
unpunched, 15" x 30 feet (30 feet = 10 yards)

link to product : https://www.harborsales.net/
ENter this in teh search query: A9069OA

It even matches the metallic particles in the car paint. Only difference is in the amount of clear coats, the car's paint job has much more clear (thus shinier). The tint is identical though and the avery does have a gloss coat. I'm going to order a bunch from the local shop and see what happens.

Disclaimer, I have never been able to find the 3M tape to compare

Remove Moulding Trim and Apply Avery tape [Picts!]

So I removed the mouldings today. See pix below for suggestions on cleaning and closeups for applying the Avery tape with strategic cuts.

Here's the original thread :
http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthr...ldings+3m+trim

This is a good link if you need to order parts:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...65&hg=51&fg=20

I broke 5 clips but had picked up 10 from my dealer. Err, I mean stealer.

I cleaned the mouldings with a bleach based cleaner to make sure they are free from any oil and dirt. It worked very well

I followed member's advice on using soapy water prior to application. This didn't work very well for my purposes. I tried one moulding application without soap and it worked so much better that I removed and re-applied the first 3 mouldings originally done with soapy water.

I think this is a near flawless match. There is one photo without flash as well for a comparison.

Great Job!!!!

Can't wait to do this. But I may try to get a full fit on the trim by taking off those White Clips first then applying the tape then snap those back in to hold the tape.

I wonder how well this tape holds up if I use it to BRA the front of my car... LOL

Cheaper then buying clear 3m tape I think.

Thanks again for the DYI and pics!!!! I will post mine when I finish.

wow that match looks great!
My trunk handle is broken and I bought a new one but i've been waiting to get it painted. I might just install it now with tape till I can get it painted.
thanks!

Arrow Comparing Avery & 3M tape

Here are some pix of both tapes. It's hard to tell from the pix but The Avery is a closer match in terms of colour and amount of metallic pigment. The 3m seems to not have enough of a metallic look in comparison with the real car paint. That's an M3 spoiler I got on ebay pre-painted. Yup. Matches 100% for $70 shipped!

I have tried to vary the camera angle to show that depending on the amount of light and angle, the camera lens is easily fooled when it comes to colour...
Hope this helps. Drop me a line and tell me about your DYI

Yanni

How to cover Front & Rear Bumper Mouldings with Silver Avery Tape

A pictorial DIY ...

Hint: Cut your piece 2.5 as wide as the moulding. Wrapping it around will inevitably make the sticker 'turn' and this way even if it doesn't line up perfectly with the actual moulding, you won't run out of tape...

Awesome DIY, in Vancouver right now, anyone that purchased this Avery tape have any leftover? How much is the tape @ Infinity Printing? Guessing it's far easier to order @ Harbor Sales.
