Only 325xi's and non-ZHP 330i's have the flap. I did this mod to my mom's car, and it does seem to make a difference (to me it sounds louder inside her car than it does inside my ZHP), but on the outside, the ZHP (and therefore every aftermarket exhaust) is still louder.

i dont think so man, Xi's are the AWD model, if you have a 325i then you dont have it.

My 99 328i sedan has the flap but it does not work.
I bought 2nd hand and have never seen or heard it closed

Did the golf tee mod on my '03 330i. Great improvement in sound - throaty but mellow plus some burbles on coasting! Even the wife likes it.

Funny, i just saw this flap in action last night. I was behind a 330i at a redlight and when it turned green and they started to accelerate, the lights from my car were shining up the tailpipe and i saw the light reflect off the flap as it was opening, it was pretty funny. On my car its stuck in the open position all the time. When the car is running when its cold push the flap closed with your fingers and youll hear a big difference in exhaust sound.

Maybe some WD40 is needed to do the reverse golf tee mod.

So what does it sound like when closed ? Mine just go quietly poooof, pooof, pooof while opened, stopped, and idling. It sounds a bit

I know. But I don't really like any sound but the sound of my thinking.

My 2003 330i has this and it was making a lot a noise at lower RPMs,while at turns or accelrating.....This flap seems like its loose and makes a weird "crankinngg" noise....any ideas on how to fix that rattle noise??

I did it to my 325xi and it made a difference in the sound at low rpms.

the "rattling" sound went away with the DIY....it sounds better than OEM!!!
Its nomore a DOT authorized exhaust....nice write up with pictures!!!

I love the M6 reps.

but, I will be getting style 313 someday...

topic wise: the golf tee mod definitely made a deeper note on my car.

i just checked mine but it stays open during idle and the tubing is still connected.....

my 330 also has this flap the doesnt close when idling. hoping to find someone that will watch and see if the flap closes at any given rpm

I didn't even think of the M52TU cars; I honestly don't know much about them.

SULEV 325i has it.

I did the mod to mine but i think i'm going to plug it back. To me it sounds more like an annoying drone.
