DME's came in - wagon started right up

installed the wiring harnesses, alternator and vacuum lines on the sedan

I will prep (and possibly install) the engine to go into the engine bay later today - at class right now

my classmates are probably wondering why my fingers and nails are black and oily/dirty

engine is in (only) the sedan - need to attach everything to it now (driveshaft, exhaust, fuel related lines, wiring, PS, suspension, cooling)

the wagon is having an issue, it is not firing on cyl 5 at all - tested by pulling the harness connection to each coil - eng missed a little more on each of the others - but no change when I did 5...ugh

I will check the harnesses tomorrow for connectivity on the ignition harness and the fuel rail harness

ESS thinks it is fuel - the connection to #5 is not seated properly

Well, you can always try to move that injector. I just hope it's not a valve (in case some crap got into the combustion chamber during the swap)

that is the thought and plan

luckily the head was never off, the headers stayed in place and the injectors were only off for about 2min

wow. simply wow.

first of all i accidentally stumbled across this thread a couple of weeks ago when my garage sentenced my trusty old e36 328i touring to death. looking for a replacement i was checking out options as to what's possible with an e46. i think it's fair to say that you have given examples galore of what can be done to an e46 touring if one has the money, the time and the dedication (i lack a lot in all 3) but beyond that i'm massivley impressed with your build and shall carry on following your activity on that project.

i just felt the need to actually sign up to e46f just to comment, so hi everyone

as for my car, i'm planning to purchase a reasonably low mileage 330i touring this week. sadly manual ones are rare as rocking horse sh*t. i would quite like to know what people's experiences are with n/a tuning. it's gonna be a daily driver, i don't want to go mad on it, maybe just give it a bit of an edge by installing sharper cams, possibly uprating the valve springs at the same time, equal length headers, CAI & a custom exhaust system, since wolfrace are just around the corner from me. ECU remap, of course, and that should roughly be it. is it worth doing, has anyone done it and what's it like?

thx

thank you very much for the compliments

sorry to hear about the deathnell for your E36

I dont have any NA E46 experience. If you decide to do cams, I have a set of the BMW Performance cams sitting here at the house (they are from my car as part of the ZHP package we have here in the States)

It's awesome to see when you inspire someone.

As far as NA tuning I think the limits of the 330 are in the piston speed, crank harmonics and hydraulic lifters so I don't think tuning the valvetrain would do much.

I would not do more than intake, headers, and tune.
After that you are getting into prices where the money would be be better spent on FI.
Exhaust won't give you any gains, the bottleneck is in the headers.
