E46 Rough Idle on Cold Start .. Scored lifter or cam ?

My 1999 E46 started to run rough when the weather turned cold ie less than 40 degrees..
In any event, we have taken several actions which have not resolved the problem. 1) Replaced all of the igniton coils (sorry I bought Bremis, not Bosche ) and 2) Replaced the CCV / Cyclone Seperator ( see my other post on how this is a "character" building exercise ) .. and we still have rough idle and check engine light on "cold start."
The mechanic pulled the codes and it looks like cylinder 6 and 8 are still the problem. They suggested the next step is to perform a compression test ? I protested a bit and called some friends to get more info. One mechanic, who I trust and helped me get 300k miles plus out of my E30, indicated it could be a scored lifter or cam. He basically nailed my symptoms. RE, the car only runs rough in cold weather (<40 degrees ). I start the car, i.e. cold start, and it runs horrible, including CEL turns on. I then stop and start the engine and the engine runs smooth...
And one last really bad news, big $$$$$s to work on the cam or lifters..
Evidently, he has seen several E46s with scored lifters and cams.. Said it might be a metallurgy problem since time, mileage and condition of the car all have varied.
Has anyone else seen a problem with the valve train of an E46 ?

Same happen here. I had cold start problem in my second year. CEL turned on, i believe it was #2 and #5. I went to dealer and they could not find anything. Same thing happen next winter, and again they could not find any defects. This was happening only occasionally (maybe once or twice on the winter) Next time it happen, I was out of warranty for a one month. They took it in for three days, and diagnosis was scored lifters at #2 and #5. First they asked foe a half (good will) somewhere around $1200. I argued with service manager, and finally we agreed on $600.
Since them car is running nicely. Has been two years since.

They (your dealer) should have had a record of your previous complaints. If they had been as thorough while it was under warranty (when you brought it in twice) they should have fixed the problem then. I can't see how they could they justify charging you for any of the work... that just doesn't seem right.
