Good job Ken. Glad it worked out for you! But just a couple of questions.

1. So we gain more low end torque. Do we lose our top end torque? (4500K+ rpms?)

2. Next time you take it out for a spin again, can you confirm that gears 3+ still pull? This is because I've read somewhere here someone saying we lose our higher gear pulls? Thx

It really just makes torque earlier, so yeah, naturally we will lose some of our top end torque. I'm about to post a video in the showroom that will show a 0-100 mph pull. 4th gear is VERY long, and I hit 100 mph while still in 4th.

Awesome job. I just recently swapped out my diff from a 2.93 to the 3.38 on a 6 sp manual.

Those are some short gears. Although it seems your highway rpm's are about the same as mine. I get about 3100 rpm's at 80 mph in 6th.

Also, I believe you don't gain low end torque and lose high end torque. You just get more torque period all throughout the power band. You gain acceleration, but theoretically lose top end speed.

That 4th gear pull seems really really long. 1st-3rd really seem to blaze by pretty quickly. I'll have to take a vid of my car in action and compare.

You will definitely see a mpg drop on the highway. Not so much in city driving. I've driven mine for about 1000 miles and I've seen about a 2-3 mpg drop on highway. Negligible loss in city.

Have fun with that diff! I know I enjoy mine.

Thanks Minnoe!

I'm going to look into ways to fix that 4th gear problem. I was getting on the highway tonight with Jeremysmith1967 behind me, and he told me that my car pulled pretty hard from 1st to 3rd...then 4th just crapped out.

I'm going to hit up AA when I go to South Florida, and talk to them about what I can do.

Today was the first true test of this diff on the highway. I made my 320 mile drive to South Florida, all highways. I actually GAINED gas mileage somehow. I usually make the trek from my door in Gville to my door in South Florida with just a little under a 1/4 tank left. I made this trip with a bit over 1/4 tank left. Same driving style, cruising at mostly 85-90 mph, hitting 120 and 130 on a few occassions.

I'm actually kinda confused by this. Does anyone have an explanation? The only thing I can think of is that the motor is making less of an effort to move the car forward because of the shorter gears.

The car hit 130 without any effort really, and felt like it could keep going, but there was too many people on the road.

90 mph at 3400 RPM
100 mph at 4000 RPM

Your really long 4th and 5th gears may have something to do with the fuel mileage.

My MPG's definitely took a hit when I went to a 3:38. Here are my pulls from 4th and 5th gear. Unfortunately, I couldn't get a video from 1st to 5th b/c I couldn't find a stretch of road long enough for it. The last pulls were from 6th gear from 70-100 mph.

EDIT: Pulls were from 3rd and 4th gear.

KPENG!!! how is your AA software, i was thinking about doing the shark injector but for 150 more (i think AA does it for 500 right?) how was the performance increase? (the software you got is where you send your ECU in right? just double checking) thanks!

Hey dude. It's only $400 for non-M E46's. I love it. Much more responsive, top speed removed, and the car revs higher. Yes, it is the one you send your ECU in for. Get this over the shark, you can get it tuned to your mods. The Shark is a generic map, this one can be customized somewhat to your setup.

damn man. good shiet! 3.91 on a fukin' 330!

but as for the 4th gear thing, i'm pretty sure it just has to do with teh gearing. its just what happens when you runn such short gears.

damn too bad i'm already running like 3100 @ 80mph in my 5spd or i'd run a short diff like you.

Okay, I updated my site.

Here's a page with the summary of Ken's X3 diff swap.
http://www.bokchoys.com/differential/diy_diff_x3.htm

I updated the list of gear ratios to include diffs from X3s and some newer Z4s.

if you have a 5 speed manual, will 4th gear be that slow too? I think 4th in the manual would be different no (with a 3.38 or 3.46)
