We just start the car - we find that it will clear out the airway and make the room it needs

OK - lots of work. We pecked at it for a while then this evening hatched a plan to take molds for the WC cars to our carbon guy, which means the half-full trailer goes right past the dipping shop. So this afternoon and evening, we turned a car into a shell.

Engine compartment blown apart

We haven't decided if we will take this off ourselves or see if the acid bath will thin it out a little more. Tricky to do...

Dirt in the trunk - man, the previous owner must have been off track a little

Oh wait. That reminds me of when I drove it.

What this stuff? TOO MUCH WIRE!

OK - 6 guys that know how to do it makes it a little faster.

E46 M3 donor car with some goodies - $15,000
One of the goodies being a carbon roof - +$1,000!
Seeing your investment at 12AM on the internet when the guys got tired of a heatgujn and resorted to a blowtorch, hammer, and putty knives - Priceless.

But I jest. Hot knives and hammers got it off safe and sound - eventually...

And loaded in the trailer, ready to get clean and light!

Patience! Picking it up from the dipper today - it will be UGLY when it gets here.

OK, finally! Back from the dipper. We opted not to go with the protective coat - trying to get the fab done and this moved out to paint (Bassen and Ross, there!) as quickly as possible.

And the key to keeping it from rusting! For some reason everyone that stops by gravitates toward this and wants to touch. Look with your eyes, not with your hands!

It is a little crazy to me that you took a drivable car and turned it into this I'm sure in person it looks a little crazy.

Looking forward to following the build!

All in the name of making it a little more fun to drive - a Hyundai is drivable as well

I dare you to paint it like this:

What's the weight savings from the dipping? And what is the target weight for the car fully built?

Hmmm, that gives me an idea...

Dipping is about 60# I have been told, but in our rush to get it out the door, we didn't weigh it before it left. Target weight - not really sure honestly. I would assume 2500 or less.

At the rate Bimmerworld is able to churn out fast race cars, like what I've seen in other build threads, I'm surprised there aren't daily updates for this car. But it does seem like the motorsports crowd here is a lot smaller than places like Bimmerforums.

I think that updates are posted as they happen, unlike my build threads where I'm often 2 months behind what's actually going on.

Playing today - zero spot weld drill-throughs to date...

Underhood metal removed mostly - PS, notice the darker color of the high strength steel sections, pretty cool!

Interior brackets on the way out

And some seam welding begins

We have plenty of other work going on that aren't part of a thread. Don't worry, we will post when we make the donuts.
