2002 M3 with 156k, thoughts...?

2002 M3 - Manual
156,000 miles
Alpine White on Grey
Manual Seats, HK Sounds, no sunroof

Found this thing for $8500 on the road. Mechanically its in good shape, body is also in very good shape. Carfax is very clean. RTAB's are good, no sludge in motor, rear subframe looks good. I don't have a ton of maintanence history, so I'm assuming I'll need a valve adjustment, and I know that rear main is starting to leak (not a big deal, I can do both myself).

I'm nervous purchasing this car with such high mileage. I have a few cars already so its wouldnt be my only car. I just don't want to have another project car.

What do you guys think?

Carfax is crap. My wife's old car was wrecked twice and its carfax is clean. Get it checked out. Mileage isn't a problem, but the fact that it doesn't have much maintenance history IS a problem.

There's a reason why it's so cheap. Assuming that all it needs is a valve adjustment isn't wise.

Let me clairify. I'm an Audi Service Advisor. It was traded on a new S4, that's why I'm getting it for the price I am. I've had a good friend of mine, Master BMW tech for 15 years look the car over and thinks its in good mechanical condition. I have a ton of history on the car up to about 2 years ago, but same owner. I'm assuming he started taking it to an indy shop (I'm only going off of carfax for repair facility).

I don't see many Alpine E46's in the MD/DC area. Are the values of these cars still going down, or have they platued?

Prices on these cars are all over the place. When I was hunting for one I have seen them go for 29k all the way down to 11k. For that mileage and year it should be around 15k so getting it for 8k is AWESOME. Use the extra cash you saved and do a full tune-up/service to it IMO.

KBB lists it as 10k assuming it's in excellent condition (retail purchase, not private sale). You think anyone wants to sell a M3 for 10k?
