Window seals...easy dyi or not?

Hey guys. I have a 02 330ci and I'm getting quite a bit of air coming from what sounds like the edge of my windows when driving at moderately high speeds. 60-75mph on the highway. Seems like a window seal issue to me which would be about right for a car with 82k miles on it. It's quite annoying as its pretty loud and it appears to cause my car to pull from side to side when driving into wind. I realize wind is gunna push the car around a bit regardless but this seems more related to the window seals.

Would something like this be easy to fix without having to take the car in?[

Does what I am explaining sound right as far as the car pulling and being noisier than it should due to air coming through? Any help is greatly appreciated as always. Peace n chicken grease.

Did you ever find out what was cuasing the wind noise in your car? Because the passenger side window on my 323ci coupe has the same kinda whistle noise at high speeds.
Thanks,
Alex

I'll bite.

I had a whistling noise from the passenger window area of my car above 60mph. It was still under warranty but after two visits they still hadn't changed the seal. I was losing patience, suspecting they were just trying to nurse it out of warranty so I had a chat with the service manager and we went for a drive. He reckoned the noise was from the wing mirror, not the window, as he could see a larger gap at the swivel joint of the passenger side mirror than the driver's side.

The high tech diagnostic tool? Masking tape! He wrapped tape around the gap at the mirror housing and we went for another drive. Silence!

I had to accept that the noise wasn't there when I bought the car and that the mirror was probably damaged by a pedestrian, bike or traffic. He quoted ~300 euro to supply and fit a new housing. I got a second hand pair for 80 euro and transferred my plastics and motors and fitted it myself. Perfect.

That reminds me, I must put the other one up on Ebay.

Hmmm.....
I can see how that would make a whistle noise too,but I can make the sound less noticeable by rolling the window down a little bit. Also it seems that with all my windows up my passenger window is pushed out by the air pressure(?) in the cab at high speeds. So wouldn't that be a window seal not working?
Thanks,
Alex

Quite possible, I was just letting you know that what sounds like a seal problem might not be. It's worth trying a bit of masking tape on it before spending >$300 on a new seal.

Yea, for real. Would you be willing you give me a little bit more information on where exactly you applied the masking tape so that i can try it?

Thanks,
Alex

Have the same problem, but know its the seal because when I go through the car wash water gets in right where the air comes in when driving...... Anyone know where to pick up seals cheap? Easy to change out by my self?

I might have found a possible solution to our problem.
It might not be the seal itself that is bad but that the window just needs adjustment. I found out that the windows might need to be vertically or longitudinally adjusted. The directions for these procedures and the test for how to see if your window needs adjustment is on pages 510-10 through 512-17 in your Bentley manual. (if you don't have a Bentley manual I'll scan the pages from mine and send them to you). I'm going to test the alignment on my windows tomorrow (seeing thats its almost 11 here) and I'll report back on how it goes.

Well if you can feel air coming in then, obviously, it's a sealing problem.

On mine, we put the tape around the swivel joint of the mirror, between the colour matched piece and the black piece. The joint where the mirror folds upwards.

Now that I think of it, after one visit they did say they had adjusted the window/door, so that may fix some minor problems. He also said that the masking tape was their main tool for finding wind noise problems.

alright guys.. same problem!! I bought a new seal from tischer $170

problem stays..

basically your seal has nothing to do with noise @ high speed.

There must be a gap between window itself and sealing. Basically you can't adjust sealing. I think it's the best idea to adjust window itself.

do not waste money on those sealings.

has anyone found a cure for the window alignment issue? When I'm at any speed above 50 and all the windows are closed but I open the drver side window and close it. It seems there is pressure builtnin the car that pushes the window out and it does not close right at the top. I have to open something else and then close my window for it to shut properly.

Same here. Just on the drivers side. Only happens when traveling over 60mph... No water comes in though.

Driving long distances I have to listen to the music louder or tilt open the sun roof.

These are the pages from the bentley manual about how to align your windows-hopefully that will help.
