P46 vs. P39 Projector Quality //-PICS-\\

Asking our sponsors or anybody else who may know: What is the difference between the projector lens used in the P46 halogen headlights vs. the P39 halogen headlights?

Our headlights were bought from a very respectable sponsor on the board whom I will continue to do business with as long as I own a BMW.

Reason I am asking is because when my brother was in front of me last night he said that my lights would go from red to bluish white whenever the cutoff would cross over his mirrors. My girlfriend also said the same thing.

When I am in front of my brother and his cutoff goes over my mirrors I see a purple and blue color then white, never orange or red (even though there is SOME orange in the pics, it doesn't show in person when looking out the rear window of my car). His focus and cutoff is also much better (even though I like the angle my cutoff has much better than his)

Below are two pictures of each headlight (P46 and P39) on a white garage door wall. Keep in mind these are both haolgen. Also, the P46's have Sylvania Silverstar Ultras and the P39's have standard Sylvania bulbs. Both are 55W of course.

Camera Setup:
  • Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z5 5.0 MP
  • Shutter Speed: 1/13
  • Aperture: 4.0
  • White Balance: Flourescent
  • Taken from same distance away from wall
  • Camera in the exact same spot for each car

P46's zoomed all the way out

P46's zoomed in close enough to show the red/orange at cutoff

P39's zoomed all the way out

P39's zoomed in close enough to show the bue/purple at cutoff

With my 6000k bulbs on my P46s, i can see a blue layer and purple layer ontop of cut off. I like it because when people pass me on the other side of the road, my headlights change colors if they are looking at it

i can't really tell you the difference, since those are aftermarket headlights. but it seems to me that the lens is spaced a little bit too close to the shield on your car. and the p39's are the opposite. if you open it up, and bend the shield a little toward the bulb, you should be able to get the same cutoff as your friend.

again this is just speculation since i haven't opened up a p46 nor p39 to compare.

Thanks for the help. I don't want the same cutoff as my brother, just a sharper cutoff (but same pattern) and no red/orange.

Also, my driver's side output is better than the passenger's side. This could be due to the projector lens itself since the bulbs are brand new (and since my OEM bulbs showed the same results).

it looks to me that both you and your bro have the same e-code cutoff from the pictures.

Almost. It is hard to tell in the pitures but on his, on his driver's side beam the cutoff to the very left is actually a bit higher than the cutoff where the cutoff starts to sharply turn up (to light the right side of the road). From left to right his angles slightly down, then turns up to light the right side of the road.

Mine starts from the ground up and continue to keep going up.

his is the same pattern as yours. his passenger is a little higher than his drivers from the picture. the only difference i see from yours and his is that the p46's seem to have both projectors slightly turned to have the that effect. as you can see in your first picture, the cutoff should be going straight and not coming up from the ground.

have you tried your bulbs in his lights? should produce the same pattern as yours since there is more light. i'm guessing you're trying to describe the faint light you would normally see, that's not in the pictures here.

Yep, I put his bulbs in my lights and got the same effect. I promise you though, my pattern is not the exact same as his. Mine curves down all the time, his never curves down. Trust me

I do appreciate you helping me resolve this

Sorry I haven't come upon this thread earlier. I will try to look into this to see if there is any change you could do but I'm not sure if it's possible.

If the headlights are from Umnitza or our retailers, they will have the exact same properties because they are the same projectors specified for both lights.

Bump. Obviously they don't have the exact same properties
