Cigarette lighter conundrums continue

More woes with my cigarette lighter socket. It has voltage and the lighter works. It will also run my mini compressor. It will not run either of my portable DVD palyers(which work fine in my other car) and its newest trick is that it will fry plug in USB adapters. The first one i tried was a cheapo so i blamed the adapter. I tried another one yesterday and about 4 seconds after pluging it in it poped and smoked and died just like the first one. I'm wondering if the ploarity is reversed if it could have this effect although i can see no reason why anyone would have ever had it out to get it reversed. Any thoughts on this greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would worry that your voltage regulator is putting out to high of a voltage.

There is much you do not know, Grasshopper.

You suspect polarity issues, but haven't said what the polarity is. The lighter socket should be hot in the center, and ground on the outside.

The lighter itself won't care about the polarity, nor will the compressor motor, but the USB charger surely will not be pleased if you plug it in backwards. The DVD is not likely to be pleased either, but it might have protection in it that prevents reverse polarity damage.

Thanks. I'm thinking the same thing- the compressor may not care re the polarity but the other devices likely would. I'll check it with my meter this evening. Voltage-wise the last time i checked it was putting out 13.4 I believe but i'll confirm that tonight.

Sorry for the slow reaction here but I tested the socket with my multimeter and the polarity was in fact reversed on my cigarette lighter socket. Why and how this came to be is beyond me as I have no reason to believe this assembly has ever been apart. Anyway, I got underneath the socket and reversed the connectors. Problem solved- The DVD player, USB charger and lighter now all work.

It's easy to take apart and you would never know from just looking at it because anyone moderately competent would not scare anything doing it.

Many people replace the ashtray console module with new at some point because it gets beat up from fingernails. The connections on the cigarette lighter are spade lug and could easily be reversed if someone wasn't paying attention.

Perhaps this is what happened. The car has low miles and the wear on the console seems to match but unless it got out of the factory this way someone must have been in their before me. If all anyone used it for was the lighter it could have been this way for a long time. Anyway, it's correct now.
