Finally took the bike to the track. It was all you guys said it would be and ended up being one of the most exciting days of my life. There is so much road. I got some great instruction about body positioning but it was hard to keep everything in check. I think my main issue is still my looking far enough but my neck just wouldn't allow me. I tweaked my neck that morning too. What's ironic about that is that I'm a physical therapist. If I could reach, I know I could have fixed that problem. Anyway, check out the pics and critique my body positioning.

Lets talk helmets....
Do I need to spend 4-600? Obviously don't want to skimp here, but what are some good ones but not crazy expensive?

HJC is biggest and for good reason, safe, reliable, cheap(er) but a bit heavy. Scorpion EXO series is long running and very standard. The "exotics" are Arai, Shoei, Shark, etc. I'd only say they are necessary if your head won't fit comfortably in the prior brands. You should read the DOT vs Snell debates and decide for yourself.

Considering trading in my R6 for a ............................ dragstar. Or something that can look like this
![]() Do you guys know any other bikes i should look at in that catagory ? The R6 is getting to uncomfortable for me to ride on (im a big guy) and its a small bike. Wanna try something in that direction, but at the same time i love high speed and getting the knee down, well trying to anyway.

Looking pretty decent for the first time at the track. Make sure to watch "Twist of the wrist 2" for all the information you need to know. Aside from that, it's just a matter of getting enough seat time with the proper knowledge if you want to get yourself dialed in properly. Quote:
With that being said, there at plenty of good helmets that are in the 200 range.. like my AVG K-3 gothic: goes for around $230 but can also be found on sale for 155.

JonJon. Stay away from HJC. They're utter crap.
They fog up. Visors fall off. Crappy build. Whatever. Ask Ben Spies how many races a crap HJC helmets have cost him. Yeah they could even be the safest lids out there, but if you can't see because of foggy, leaky visor, or missing visor it won't be much good then won't it. |

i just picked up a Bilt DOT non Snell at the local cyclegear with visor on sale for $84 combined. I had a cheap Fulmer to begin with but the padding sucks and air flow was just as bad. This Bilt has a helluva lot more padding, it really hugs the halo of my head and makes me feel that much more secure in it, and def better air flow.

With regards to cheaper helmets, there are a lot of options that will do what you need. What you pay for are the bells and whistles. I've tried on a few pairs and I've owned some old HJC, a Scorpion Exo 750 and now, a Bell Star Carbon. I've tried on a Nexx XR1R for a day. I had the Exo 750 for about a year and it's been a good lid. It's got some great features for the price. I got my girlfriend a Bell Vortex and she seems to like it a lot. Regardless of what you choose, go somewhere and try on a bunch of different lids. See what fits your headtype. Also, look at webbikeworld.com. These guys have in depth reviews of pretty much every helmet out there.
Pasha, yes, it was glorious, man.

right now sportbiketrackgear.com has the Scorpion EXO 1000 for 124 bucks.
I have one and love it. Fits great, built in flip down sunglasses, cheek air bladders and plenty of vents.

The Exo 1000 is a real piece of s#it. Read the webbikeworld review on that. It's extremely heavy and the features, while plenty, just don't work well. It's also made for a more upright riding position and not perfect for the leaned over style. I'd suggest you look into the other Exo lines... the 400, 500, 700 or 750. The airflow isn't the best in them, but it's pretty good for cold weather riding. I keep it around as my winter lid. The Bell Star flows a ton of air... almost too much for winter.

I got a Shoei rf-1000 "artifact" on sale for around $200 after riding in HJC and it's so much better! Just get a closeout deal on a quality brand for under $300.

I think you need to find out what fits first. I'm not a big fan of Shoei simply because they feel weird on my head. Always liked Arai and ended up going with an entry level one that fit great. Another factor is weight.
