Re: Sportbike riders

Yes, the spirit of a postie. There's always something else to spend time and money on. I've had it 6 months and still looks just as you see in the picture.

Surprising well. Throttle is ridiculously smooth. Like already dunno mapped smooth. Builds pretty linear too.
Rock steady in the turns too. Very planted feeling, like my 1kRR used to be, but transitions a little easier than the the fireblade did. I kept my RCS master and that made it very nice on trail braking.
I was pleasantly surprised by the stock suspension. Truthfully I was very hesitant. Hadn't been on stock suspension in years.
Anyway, all in all its a blast. Looking forward to doing another full trackdays with it. Rain kept me off the track all day Monday and I only got two sessions. Would've done more but Dunlop GPAs are new to me. As well as the bike. Didn't wanna experiment with it.

I had a pair of bridgestone battlax bt014's (which are no longer made).

Didn't measure the tire pressure, but they seem firm to the touch. I'll check it here in a bit. As for the rear axle alignment - I've been seeing people do it with a string. Any discernable feel while riding though?

Re: Sportbike riders

I've never used the string method. Every owner's manual says to use the indicator marks on the swing arm. I don't race or track my bikes. So the swing arm is enough for me. But there are lots of website that show you how.

Essentially if your axle is off a significant amount in either direction then the bike will be hard to lean and maintain a consistent line in a left lean or a right lean but not both.

And your bt14 are ancient. Sport bike tires should be replaced every 2 years regardless of mileage and wear or when worn to the indicators.

these Q3's are great but don't expect to much life out of them. They are not designed for longevity. They are designed for quick warm up and high traction. I've seen riders kill a set in 3000 miles. I haven't seen anyone go more then 5000 miles on them. Keep in mind these Q3's have only been in production for under a year.

Seating a motorcycle tire bead takes upwards of 50psi. Safe to say your installer didn't drop the pressure back down to factory specs.

Admin notes
I run the following PSI's when I'm not lazy
R1
40 for commuting
36 with a small passenger
32 in the canyons
30 during riding clinics

Busa
40 for commuting
36/40 with larger passengers
33/36 canyon w/passenger
32/32 canyon solo

Bought my first bike in December, a '73 CB500 that I turned into a cafe racer. Fell in love with bikes like I knew I always would. Then I got spoiled by the modern amenities on my girlfriend's Monster 796, such as starting when you press the starter, and being able to stop. All things I really missed not having on the CB. So, put a deposit on one of the new FZ-09's a few weeks ago, but kept shopping around. Ended up going and getting my deposit back today because I signed papers on a 2012 Streetfighter 848. I can't wait to get the thing. It's in Austin, TX and I'm in Ohio, so it'll be a week or so before it gets here, but I can't wait.

Going from a CB500 to an 848 Ducati probably means I'll be dead within a week, but it'll be a hell of a week!

Red w/ red frame. Dealer in Texas is doing it right and shipping it in an enclosed trailer for me. I'm going to feel like a baller unloading this thing next to my Mini and Scion lol.

Very nice, but I'm preferential to white with red frame

If they offered the SF848 like that I'd take the white too. GF's Monster is black, she said she didn't like the white. I think it looks killer!

Hell, I could always plastidip it for a week

I really liked the black too, but the black one my local dealer had was another two grand for all the mods they had done already. Nothing I was that interested in for the money

My dream Monster is Corse scheme with a red frame - nice!

Does the Streetfighter have one of those nylon tanks everyone grouses about?

The plastic tank covers can be purchased separately.

Took the bike out today and got the new Q3's broken in. Holy smokes those are some sticky tires. They feel great! Thanks again for the recommendations.

For your reward - a quickie on Irish road racing

*edit* To Nova - my buddy has a Monster 696, albeit an older gen. My red 796 should look familiar to you as well

Anyone know where to find a service manual for a monster? Haynes/Chilton's level is fine, I'm not sure I need a whole Bentley.
