Nice. I got my belts replaced and thermostat replaced yesterday for $281.

Come on guys, this is seriously the easiest DIY out there. New belts from Autozone cost $40 and I got them installed in around 15 minutes. Don't waste your money having a shop do it.

I agree. It's about as hard/time consuming as changing the oil. But for those that aren't mechanically inclined, $150 sounds about right.

You don't have to be mechanically inclined to do it, as long as you have a couple tools, just follow one of the many DIY's on here and it's a piece of cake.

The only "strange" tool is the t50 torx bit. Definitely an easy DIY.

That's a thread on replacing the water pump but you have to take the belts off to do that, so it's the same idea. You may or may not need that tool to get the fan off, it just depends on your car. I ***think*** automatic cars are more likely to have the mechanical fan and thus need that special tool. Anyways, once you get the fan out it's just a matter of taking the caps off of a couple of T50 torx bolts and cranking them to one side and all the belts will come loose.

Yeah, the E46 has 2 belts. One belt is for the AC and one that runs the alternator, PS pump, and water pump. The AC belt is on the outside, the drive belt is behind it.

Easy diy i did on my E36 , i will be doing my E46 soon water pump and thermostat, belts already change at 66.000, now have 70.000 miles.

Just did a belt swap during a water pump diy and must say it was easy.

changing your belts is only difficult when you have the mechanical fan (either you must remove it or work around it).

other then that, its really easy to change them - my tensioners use regular hex heads that you can turn with a socket wrench (you grab the one that's molded into the metal and offset from center). Rotate, put a small screw or pin of some sort through the "lock" holes to keep the tensioner from tightening back down.

Then slip the old belts off, put the new ones on (being sure to route them the same as the old ones), remove the pin or screw from the lock holes in the tensioners... voila, you're done!

all u need is a few sockets, a screw driver, a t10 torx screwdriver, and a helping hand, its not worth $150, its a 30min job

i get mine from advance auto because they have dayco which is a german company
