328ci906's E46 Journal (328-->///M3)

It's been almost 5 years since I bought my first BMW. It was the first I had ever sat in, let alone the first E46 I got to drive. As an early high school graduation present to myself, I bought a 2000 328ci off a local dealer in Scranton, PA. It had everything an 18 year old could ask for, Sport, Premium, and Cold Weather Packages. 5-Speed tranny, H/K sound, and some sporty looking style 68's. Sure it had a wood interior, and a badly worn steering wheel. But I loved the sh!t out of this thing. Slowly improving it over my 3yr ownership...

This is what it looked like right when I picked it up...

Rust

Clean

Old wood interior.

It wasn't long before I got sick of the wood interior and decided to wrap it in 3M vinyl. I also added clears and LED tails because, well that's one of the first things you do when you purchase an E46.

Then, it was maintenance time. Along with all of the cooling system goodies, I went ahead and replaced the vanos with a new one from Dr. Vanos...

Next mod? Angel Eyes...

Then, my starter/alternator/battery decided to sh!t the bed on me. Great I said, fixed all of that and drove my newly repaired car to autozone to drop off some waste oil. As soon as I turn into the lot, my PS dies.

What a mess this one was to clean up, ATF was everywhere...

Then it was suspension overhaul time. New FCABs, sway bar end-links, and control arms.

Next, I decided I had enough of that aged old triangle steering wheel. So I added a new ///M wheel...

Overall it as really coming together...

Then, I added an iPhone 4 dock to the ash tray...

200k Miles!!! DSC off like a boss

Then I participated in my first Auto-X. Anyone that owns an E46 needs to do this. It was soo much fun...

Video...

Wasn't my best run, but the car ran well considering it was less than 20 degrees outside. It even snowed later that night.

Then came time for a tough decision. I decided to sell my beloved 328ci. It had almost 210k miles on it when I sold it, and it still ran well. I just felt it was time for a change. I cleaned her up, waxed and polished her and took some decent pics...

So long, you will be missed...

So where to go from here? Naturally I wasn't going sell a perfectly good E46 in order to downgrade. Over the past year, I had been watching E46 M3 prices take a tumble. So I decided now was as good a time as any to make the switch. I searched for over 6 months to find my ///M, and I'm glad I waited.

A little over 2 hours away in Philadelphia, PA, I found my new M3. It's a 2003 with Cinnamon leather, H/K sound, Navigation, PDC, Heated/Elec. Mem/Lumbar Seats and stock 19" Style 67's. Pretty much loaded.

Dealer Photos...

Parked Next to my old 328ci...

^Thanks, no big plans yet. Mostly maintenance until the summer. Then I'm gonna look into some CSL parts. A diffuser and maybe the trunk if I can get a decent deal on one, and some angel eyes. I'll probably go with Umnitza V2s this time, my bargain AE's didn't last as long as I was hoping. So what else? CSL wheels...

Did a quick 0-60 run in the M3 tonight. Conditions were pretty much perfect. 45 degrees outside and less than 2 gallons left in my tank. New-ish Michelin Pilot Sports and one passenger. My launch could have been a bit better but I'm happy enough with it.

I examined the clip and I got right around 5.0-5.4 seconds for the 0-60 time. Which I think is pretty decent for a bone stock M3 with 162k miles on it.

I also used an app for my iPhone called dynolicious and the best I got from that one was 5.4sec. So I seem to be floating right above that 5.0sec mark. I even got a 14.02 sec quarter mile at 105.8 mph. :thumbsup2:

And save me the street racing lecture. This was done on a dead end road (one end was closed for bridge work) in the middle of nowhere. The only property around for miles is my buddy's who rode shotgun with me.

^I bought a steel brush for a cordless drill and just sanded them down to get the rust off. Then painted them with Caliper paint from Autozone/Advance Auto etc...

Lots of eFans bitch and moan about young owners and how irresponsible they are, too young to own BMWs, but this is proof that no two people are the same. Your 328 looked way better when you sold it than it looked when you bought it, especially like the wrap job on the interior, very nice.

New car sounds sweet, enjoy and dang those csls make a difference in looks!

Today, I took my new(ish) to me M3 to an Auto-X at Hershey Park. Overall I think the ///M did very well considering it was only 40 degrees outside. It isn't until you bring an M3 to its limits that you can really see the changes over a standard E46. My old 328ci did well on it's first Auto-X too, but not like this. Obviously the M3 is faster in a straight line, but what's more surprising is the way it feels in the corners.

The LSD specifically is worth it's weight in gold on a course like this. (This much was immediately apparent to the owner of the boosted 135i) Whereas my old 328ci struggled to put it's power down, the ///M just squatted and took off. I could tell from my first time out that I could get on the power sooner through a turn and feel more confident exiting the turn that I wouldn't go sideways. Surprisingly, I feel that the M3 had a similar amount of body roll to that of my old 328ci. Maybe I'm due for a suspension refresh but honestly I'm surprised it wasn't drastically stiffer.

On to the pics, and for car guys there was some real porn here today.
Endless 911's, 944s, Boxsters and Caymans. As well as another E46 M3, a 135i, STi, SRT-4, RS4, and the mother of all track porsches. GT3 goodness...

This thing was an animal. This is one of my all time favorite cars and I was thrilled to see that this owner actually uses his car.

The Porsche Club of America ran the event so more than half of the cars there were Porsches.

Pre-Race fluid check...

So like any other Auto-X your morning starts with a health and safety lecture, followed by an opportunity to walk the track. This is honestly one of the biggest parking lots I've ever seen. And the roller coasters in the background were a nice touch.

Lining up at the grid...

Sport Mode ON, DSC OFF... (heated seat on :redspot it was freezing today)

iPhone all mounted up and ready to record. Thanks Wolf for the heads up about that App!!

On to the video. This was my fastest run of the day at 54.888 seconds. A whole 3 seconds behind the other E46 M3. But honestly I was there to have fun and not ruin my daily driver. Plus his ///M was bare bones with no options. i.e. cassette deck, manual cloth unheated seats, non-HK sound, reflector headlights, no back seat etc... So I had a lot of extra weight to carry around. (plus my buddy rode shotgun with me)

I uploaded it in 720p. My iPhone 5 took some damn good video...

After-math... Small pieces of rubber I found that had collected on my CSLs as well as the lip of the rear bumper ahahaha.

To those of you who own an E46 and have never done this. Take my advice and attend an Auto-X. It will give you a new appreciation for this machine that takes you to work so comfortably everyday. You'll begin to realize how bi-polar these cars can be. One minute they are calm and civil on a long highway cruise and the next minute, they "stick their hand down your trousers and have a bit of a rummage". <-- Stolen Top Gear quote from Clarkson
