I think 911 is the series. 996 is the body style/model year etc.

one more explanation incase you still didn't get it

a Porsche 996 911 is the same as saying a BMW E46 330ci (or 325i or whatever)

... and the one before 996 was the 993, and before that was the 930.

They are all 911s
The 993 chassis was built from the early 90's (I think) until 1998. This was the last generation of air cooled 911s. The most highly prized version of the 993 is probably the 1998 911 Turbo S which is the last air cooled turbo. The 996 chassis 911 was built starting with model year 1999 continuing through to today. This is the first generation of water cooled 911.

call it what u want, 964 (with those rings in the headlights), 993, 996...they are all 911...
Basic porsche design, the 911 existed for a very very long time already...
There are tons of porsche websites that explains the history of the 911s.
And of course not considering the purpose built midengine 993/996 (911) GT1, the hottest has always been the GT2 both 993 and 996...
but then again, RUF sure has their way building all new cars based on those porsches

thanks, fellas ; reason i was asking was that i was watching one of the races on SPEED yesterday & some of the cars were listed as 911's & others as 996's; the porsche 911 used to be one of my favorite cars in childhood, as i grew a little older it fell out of favor (started thinking of it as an old man's car !!!); however i think it has regained it's position as dream car in my mind-i gotta have one of the turbos-haha, may be in a few years !!!) maybe i'm becoming old

the 912 was around from the mid to late 60's. ('65-'69 I think)

It was designed to be a "poor man's version of the 911"
Pretty much looked the same as the 911, with less amenities and less power.

There was also I special edition "912 E" released in '76.

if you are a Porche fan..check this

Some of you may have already seen this webpage but those who haven't here is a race close up of the GT 3. My brother ran this car in the Grand Prix Americas Miami and came in 6th in class.. Great car, tough race...it took a lot of abuse and raced the next week in Atlanta! I have a lot more respect for the GT3 since then. Enjoy!
