Unhappy Recycling/Disposing of Brake Fluid/Motor Oil?

Hey everyone,

I've been using the motive extractor for oil changes and recently used it for a clutch system bleed (About a half pint's worth, which is now sitting on top of the motor oil, in a visible layer).

I took the extractor to Kragen to dispose of the oil, and they noticed the separation and asked about it. I told them that it was a mix (didn't know that was bad before I did it). They cannot recycle Brake fluid or a mix of it and oil - there are environmental laws they must follow and large fines are a result of non compliance.

I'm honest and am not going to try to "sneak" it in to a motor oil recycler and give them my problem. I want to do the right thing.

Questions are:
1) Is there any way to recycle the mix?
2) If not, can I use a turkey baster and separate, and then recycle brake fluid separately from motor oil? Where can I do that?

I'm in the SF Bay area, if anyone knows of somehwere I can do that....

Thanks in advance!

Considering selling 2002 M3 Convertible (~38,000 miles) this year (don't drive it enough...). If seriously interested, PM me. SF Bay area.

I'd suggest that you contact your local municipality and find out if they have a hazardous waste collection site. Typically sites like this will collect items like open paint cans, automotive fluids, pesticides etc. etc.

In the future, you can bring your used oil to your auto parts center, and save the other fluids for the city collection site. Most cities won't charge you for dropping off stuff like this, since they don't want you to dump it improperly.

I too learned the hard way.

They take mixes of brake fluid and motor oil - no need to separate!
