Yeah they were talking about this a while ago. The annoying part is that they're doing it because snot-nosed brats buying coupes felt silly spending slightly more than their 3 series sedan brethren. So this is really nothing more than a way for obnoxious people to feel slightly better about themselves for driving a higher numbered vehicle

It's just a carry over of the nomenclature between the 5/6.

its a shame because the original 3/m3 was a coupe. i could almost understand if they renamed the sedan 4series.

I thought it was to match nomenclature with that of Audi and Mercedes.

I had heard over a year ago BMW was going to differentiate the labeling of their coupes and sedans because the coupes (3 and 6 series) were more expensive than the sedans (3 and 5 series). Customers in the 3 series market apparently were complaining that they were buying a more expensive product and receiving the same labeling.... personally, it sounds ridiculous to me.

BMW lost me with the "6 Series Gran Coupe." I still can't quite understand WHY.

Yes, BMW is splitting the 3 series line to match the 5 and 6 series. BMW will be launching the 4 series concept at the Detroit Auto Show. Stay tuned to F30Driver.com for more coverage as we head to Detroit in January.

I was just about to post something similar.

http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=767418

EDIT: I do like that shape much more than the sedan. I was going to crack a joke about them making a "4 Series Gran Coupe," but apparently, it's going to be real. Why, BMW? Just... why? I don't quite understand why they would have a 3 Series sedan line and introduce a 4 Series sedan called a "Gran Coupe." Same with the 6 Series.

But whatever.
