New E92 M3 Vs. Used E60 M5

I wanted to get everyone's opinion. Seeing that the new BMW M3's sticker price is right around $70,000. I see that number and a used 2006 M5 comes to mind as well. What would you rather buy with your money, New M3 or used M5? Why?

M5 for sure, the sound of the ///M V10 alone is worth the price tag

Neither, really - it says a lot about those cars that BMW won't certify either of them. If I had to choose, I'd go with the M3; the M5's too bulky to truly play in.

tough decision... definitely varies on a person by person basis, but since i'm graduating college, have no kids, and don't drive clients around... the m3 is for me

i would say get a used m5 and then in a year switch to an m3. A used m5 has already taken it's biggest depreciation loss.

Even if you got a 2006 M5, it is still under factory warrenty for a couple more years so you are safe till then.

I like the styling of the m5 more but I like the performance of the m3 more. That's a hard one, but I think I'd pick the m3 mainly from the all the great reviews.

I'm sorry but I just dont agree with the "more cylinders is better" argument.

I'd take an E46M3 over an E39M5 any day, the cylinder gap there is 2. So then why does the E60M5 suddenly become so much better just because it has 2 more cylinders and about 70 more HP than the M3 (just like the gap from the E46M3 to the E39M5 was)?

OP: it really comes down to your needs, and what car feels better to you. If it were me, I'd probably wait until a few M3s hit the used market (or until the next model year comes out). Think about how the 01 and some 02 E46M3s are kind of the "dreaded" years. I haven't driven either car, but I'm sure the M3 is more fun to throw around than the bigger, heavier M5.

What do you want to do with it? An E92 M3 will out perform an M5 on a track, but the M5 is faster in a straight line. If you want more room, get the M5. I don't know if you're a manual or DCT guy, but keep in mind that on the M5, you only get SMG-II and if you get a 6 speed, you can't disable DSC completely. But with the M you get DCT and with the 6 speed you get track mode DSC and the option to turn it off completely. M5 is a luxury sedan that happens to be very fast. M3 is a super sporty GT that will perform very very well on a track.

If i had 55+k to spend on a car it would be a prosche - you can get a nice 997s used or even a 996 turbo and save the left over money. Those 2 are my 2 choices in 2 years

But as for your question i would get an m5 for that price tag

Couple things wrong here.

1) it is SMG III
2) you CAN turn off DSC fully on the M5 with 6MT
