Are these legal?

These are photos of a Acura neon glow license plate, they have BMW ones as well. Are these legal to drive with at night? And do you guys think this is "tacky"???

It reminds me of the Sunfire's back w/ the word "Pontiac" lit-up. Not my cup of tea (on a Bimmer anyway).

they are illegal in most states because the light is an obstruction of the license plate (though not a strong obstruction, an obstruction nonetheless). u prolly wouldnt be pulled over for it, unless of course the cop is a dick.

When I lived in Japan we had those light up in the 3rd brake light at the base of the rear window for the Acura Integras...now I look back---CHEESY!!
