Weird, never read anything about a thumping sound. Take it to your mechanic for a diagnostic? My Indy would check it out for free....

It looks like the 330xi uses an LUK LF-30 pump. Your 2003 325i looks like it uses an LF-20 pump. If I remember correctly, you can fit the LF-30 pump in place of an LF-20, however, you also need to replace a pricey hose to make the LF-30 work. Those links are to realoem, which is a good resource to get to know.

Thats lame. Are aftermarket brands okay to go with? Or should I just stick with a new/used LuK? BMA has one for $250 and a junkyard has a used one w/ 80k miles on it for $200, that is a bit over my price range compared to eBay's $110.

Has anybody purchased an aftermarket pump, like from eBay or Rockauto, and not have any problems with their pumps so far?

I did, buyautoparts.com was the seller on eBay and it was $136 total. No issues yet but only at about 800 miles.

Have a grinding noise coming from my power steering pump started yesterday. have 68 k miles. I have a xiT and I believe as per realoem and other sites i have the LUK-LF 30.

Question 1- is there anyway to visually confirm i have LF 30 ? or just go with what several parts places are indicating that LF 30 is norm for XI?

Question 2- do i need any gaskets for the lines connecting to the pump that im going to change?

Just an update... probably 15K miles on my ebay (buyautoparts.com) pump and no issues at all.

Ditto on the turning the steering wheel back and forth after the install. I turned the wheel probably 8 times back and forth but no power steering. I went out for a few hours, came back and cranked the car back up, moved the steering wheel twice and I heard some noise (maybe bubbles?) and it was working. Refilled the reservoir and all is wheel. Thanks for this DIY.

OP thanks for the DIY, just did mine today with 145k on the clock. Nearly shat myself when I dropped the car and tried to move the wheel and there was no power steering but like everyone else said after a few turns lock to lock it worked through the unprimed pump. FYI to everybody, I bought the pump off of Amazon for ~$300 (Luk30). Car was built 07/01 for any references.
