Pothole Tire Damage

So the other day I hit a pothole and it sounded a bit worse than normal. Upon inspection it appears as though it the pothole made a slight divot in the sidewall of the tire, on the inside of the tire, leaving a small rubber flap hanging. 3 days later it's still holding air pressure fine, so it's not leaking at all. If a picture will help, I can get one after my battery recharges on my camera.

How concerned should I be about this damage? Should I be taking this in to get looked at/replaced?

Thanks,
Paul

Do you mean it left a air bubble on the side of your tire?

Pics please for diagnosis, but they need to be good, well-lit pics.

The sidewall rubber's only real job is to keep air in and protect the belt package from the elements. It's not really a structural part of the tire.

So if the rubber is torn, but there's no leak and no belt damage (would be evidenced by a bulge in the tire), and the belt package isn't exposed AT ALL, you probably don't have to replace it. However, if the belts are damaged, you need to replace the tire ASAP. And if the belts are exposed to the air, the tire needs to be replaced pretty soon. Once the belts are exposed to air and moisture, it's only a matter of time until the materials break down and fail.

Hope this helps. Even with good pics, we might not able to tell and you may have to have a tire shop you trust take a look at it.

Here's some pictures of the tire. I decided to change them out with my summer tires since it was time anyways. Upon closer inspection, I think I've decided to replace them, because I don't want to have to worry about wheel failure if I'm doing some spirited driving.

Do you guys have the same opinion?

Thanks,
Paul

Still hard to say from those pics. It looks pretty superficial, but if you look behind those flaps of rubber that are halfway torn off and you see cord/belt, then the tire needs to be replaced. I don't see a bulge in the sidewall, which would indicate either belt damage or a split in the liner, which would also mean you'd need to replace it.

I think you're gonna have to find a tire shop you trust, that won't just try to sell you a new tire, and have them take a look at it.

Good luck, I know this hasn't been much help, probably.
