Anyone else think they update their lines too much? Seems like everytime I log on here there's another mention of a new nikon camera. Or maybe I just wish I had waited a little longer to get a DSLR (I've got a D70) to get some of the new bells and whistles?

i think they update their consumer lines too much. they are very pretty well current with their pro stuff. i think they really need to update their lens lineup to be honest.

I agree, the D80 still has so much life left in it.

The D80 is coming up on 2 years I think. That's a good run for a DSLR IMHO. Leave it alone too long and you risk losing new customers to other brands who have a more modern product.

Thom Hogan has a source telling him that some 1.4 primes are due out at the same time. A 24 MP D3 might also be released at the same time.

if i remember correctly, a typical nikon dslr (or perhaps all dslrs in the market) has an average life of about 18-24 months? i personally think it is too fast

But Woobiee count how many DSLRs that came out after the D80 (D40, D40x,D60, D300, D3, D700)? From what I've read the D80 still rocks, just like the D200.

@editt01 Electronics do that a lot - upgrading. You want people to by the new instead of the old. Plus you are competing with other companies. For your loyal customers you want to keep them coming back. Basic Economics.

I would not count on a D400 (D300 replacement) anytime soon. The D80 is due for a revamp and Nikon is likely to release some high MP full frame bodies in the near future as well. Possibly a D3x and a D700x.

A 24MP(or other super high MP crop sensor camera) D300? I doubt it. In any case, why would it matter? The D300 is an incredibly competent camera for most any need.

D100 was out for a long while until D200 came out which was a huge update. D300 and D700 fill that void for now. I can't see them having a D400 right now. Its gonna be interesting to see what Canon will bring out that will fit between Xsi and 40D.

Nikon's replacement for the D80 is expected to be a major update and includes both a 12-megapixel sensor, GPS for geotagging photos, live LCD previews, a faster 4.5 shots per second and a longer-ranged 18-105mm kit lens. A release date is still unknown but is likely to be made available on or shortly before the opening day of the Photokina expo in late September

...and you can still get awesome photos from a D40, D50, D70, D1, etc.

i dunno, i am a tech junkie, but i like "knowing" my cameras. like a warm blanket. you know all its nuances and are able to get great shots quickly without learning another piece of equipment every new cycle of releases. maybe that's just me.

I totally agree. that's why I got the D50. But then down the road I realized I need more in my camera for what I like to shoot. Should have gotten the D80 I've gotten to know Nikon's technology a little more.

So now my upgrade list is looking like D80/D90/D200/D300

Sorry to chime in late on this one..

I agree with all said above.. I just (literally JUST, 2 days ago) went from a d80 to a d300 and WOW. The 51 point AF and the 3d depth control is AMAZING! BUT, honestly the d80 taught me everything I know, and in hindsight I am glad I went with that first.. This d300 is pretty intimidating if you don't know what your doing. I literally took it out of the box and felt like I was re-learning photography all over again.. I mean I know my stuff, but re-learning the camera was and still is a pretty serious undertaking. I mean its safe to say we all love getting new toys, but to learn a new piece of equipment like this every year or so would be just too much. Plus what kinda gets me about the quick releases of these new dslr's is it brings the value down on our present equipment drastically.

I would def love to see some new lenses in the near future, there is a couple of lenses that Canon makes that I would love to see in a Nikkor.. I too have heard that 1.4's are on there way very soon, I look forward to that. I am really liking the new perspective lenses they just released, I got to play with one at Ritz and man can you do some cool things with it. I finally just picked up the 10.5mm fisheye too, talk about long overdue, and its absolutely amazing.. Such a solid lens.

I posted some shots of the new setup in the other thread.

Supposed to come with a new 18-105VR lens in kit form. Could be tasty.
