Nah man, these plastic cups are great. This brand doesn't have the plastic aroma that some others do, we use them for BJCP competitions all the time. Disposable, so you can line them all up for vertical tastings.

It was a fellow beer-geek's birthday, so we opened up some pretty epic beers. Shortly after the Utopias, we did a 4-year vertical of this:

This was an '08, '09, '10, and '11. I was torn between the '08 and the '10 for my favorite. I'm willing to bet with some age on it, the '10 would far surpass the '08. The '09 was the only one I didn't care for, FG was way too high and it was kind of sweet.

Tons of coffee, chocolate, roast, and everything else you would expect from an imperial stout. Very chewy mouthfeel. The younger ones almost had a phenolic peppery thing going on, but that had mellowed in the older vintages. Surprisingly, these were not as hot as I expected them to be.

As far as the Utopias, it is delicious, but probably not worth $250. You can get similar flavor profiles out of a $50 or $60 port.

It is 100% still, and leaves massive legs on the glass. The flavor is mostly dark fruit and intense heat, but it isn't solventy like you would expect it to be. Lots of caramel, dates, raisins, and maple syrup. Two thumbs up for sure. If it was < $100 I would be drinking it more often.

Sorry for the brevity of my previous Utopias post... was focusing on some more beer at that point in time

I can definitely get you some '09, but that is the overly sweet vintage. A lot of people like it, and a lot of people don't care for it. If you know that it is the sweet vintage and want some anyhow, hit me up.

My local watering hole gave me these to drink last night

Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales "Maracaibo Especial "
The Lost Abbey "Red Poppy Ale"
The Bruery "Loakal Red"

I also had a beer from Heretic earlier in the day that was called "Evil Twin" and that was a DAMN good beer. They've been doing all kinds of promotion up and down the coast here. There are posters everywhere so I gave in to the hype and tried it and it was great.

Ah I don't know anything about the different vintages. It's just one of those must have beers. I'll keep my eye out for that list you sent me. My collection is not that big and don't want to trade any.

Anyway, I picked these up.

Well, were they any good? A green tea IPA sounds interesting, but not sure it sounds good.

I tried the Green Tea IPA and it was boozy but good. I didn't get too much green tea flavor but it was there. Not sure if I would try it again though.

^^This, I am jealous of.

I'm enjoying the summer weather with a Harpoon IPA out on the deck. About to fire up the charcoal grill for steaks!

Not the hefe, but still pumped to finally try this stuff. Am I the only one who isn't very impressed with German beers? They taste fine, they're just nothing special

I spent 5 days in Germany last summer and honestly was disappointed. Thanks to the purity law there is very little variety. Belgium is where it's at

The purity law was lifted 23 years ago, hence why you can buy a hefeweizen in Germany . . . but tradition is a heck of a thing.

Supposedly the purity law was designed to outlaw brewing beer with any grain other than barley, because they wanted to make sure brewers didn't buy up all the wheat and rye so people wouldn't starve.

Hefes and Berliner-Weisse are the best beers made in Germany IMO. Weihenstephaner hefes are out of this world.

Other than that, I have not been too impressed with German beers. Of course some world-class pilsners come from Germany, but that is not my drink of choice. The legacy of the Reinheitsgebot, along with taste preference of the country, really limits the creativity of the brewers. At least they can finally use some wheat.
