My Ride: 03 Ti Silver M3
Derry's Racing Dynamics M3

James Derry is an avid autocross racer and BMW enthusiast. After owning four E36 M3's, one being a 430HP turbocharged monster, James has stepped up to the E46 M3 to take his hobby to the next level. The E46 M3 is arguably one of the best choices for an all-around street and track car.

Since the car's main duty is weaving around cones, priority was placed on the suspension. Racing Dynamics, Inc. in Alexandria, Virginia installed their Racing Dynamics Swaybar Kit. The oversized bars are direct replacements for the OE bars, but measure 30mm front and 25.5mm rear and are adjustable. Three positions on the front bar and two positions on the rear bar allow James to easily tune the car's handling characteristics. Polyurethane bushings replace the rubber OE bushings, keeping the bars firmly in place. Bilstein PSS9 Threaded-Body Coilovers give James the ability to fine tune damping, pre-load, and weight distribution to his tastes. The Racing Dynamics Front Strut Brace helps reduce chassis flex, allowing the suspension components to do their job. The ride can be summed up as firm, but not bone jarring. Lightweight SSR GT3 wheels are used on the street, and even lighter SSR Competitions are used on track days.

For engine upgrades, James turned to a nearby tuner and friend, Gary Martin of Martin Motorsports. A set of Schrick Race Camshafts was installed, along with custom ECU programming. The race cams gives the car extra pull from 4000 RPM to redline. The entire exhaust was replaced with larger diameter stainless steel components to allow for optimum airflow. Stainless steel headers, race pipes and x-pipe mate to an Eisenmann 83mm Race Exhaust. Were this your average daily driver, the tone and volume of the exhaust would be overwhelming for most. It has a raw sound that lets people know, as if they shouldn't already, to get out of the way. For those cars that can't get out of way quick enough, the Brembo brakes on all four corners will do the job.

Not being one to leave things as is, James wanted to give the car a unique appearance without going overboard. Racing Dynamics, Inc. installed the Tornado Aero Kit, consisting of a front bumper, side skirts, and a rear bumper. The Racing Dynamics Roof Spoiler was also installed to complete the look. The front and rear Tornado bumpers are made out of a new composite material that retains enough rigidity to not deform under high-speed wind pressures, but incorporates flexibility to withstand light impacts. The Tornado side skirts are made of flexible PU-RIM and the roof spoiler is made of rigid PU. Hella DE fog lights are used in place of the OE lights and brake cooling is fed through the round openings in the bumper.

Unlike most racecars, James' M3 is fully equipped with "TV's all up in the headrests" and a large subwoofer box. 7" LCD monitors are housed in each headrest, as well as in the passenger visor. On track days, lightweight Sparco race buckets replace the stock seats and the rest of the stereo components are easily removed as designed. A full roll cage (not pictured) was added for safety, but also to further stiffen the chassis.

James has recently replaced this M3 with another, but with the SMG transmission. Where he decides to go with this new one, only he knows. With one highly modified E46 M3 under his belt, you can be sure that the new one will be a car to watch out for.
