2003 M3 or 540i 6-speed?

Thinking about upgrading to a better car. Have several options. Have a 2003 March production M3 on order but just checked out the 2003 540i with the new sports package. I am used to the size of the 3 series but 540 is so much more car for the buck. The M3 is 57K msrp plus a 3 month wait. The 540-6sp is about the same price ($60K msrp - $3000 = $57K my target price). However, due to the better residual and money factor on the 5, I'll be saving around $5500 over a 3 year lease. Just want to get a feel of everyone's opinion on this. Thanks.

ps. From what I've seen so far, I am not feeling the design of the upcoming 2004 5 series nor would I ever consider buying a first year production car. So new 5er is out of the question. Now if only I can justify the extra 5K and 3 month wait on the M3 over 540 6sp...

Do you see how beautiful that red car is???

Definitely go with the M3...besides, the 5 series is going to have a new look in about a year...

yeah, i'd have to say the M3. i love the 540's, but the style's been around for awhile and the new ones will be out soon. i'm sure you'll be happy w/ either one though. good luck

I would go M3 mainly based on the fact that the e39 is almost done production.

Now I love the 540, a lot, there is a brand new one down the block a '03. But the M is a great car. It depends what you want, 4 doors or 2 that is what would make my choice. I would go for the M becuase I only would want two doors

Doesn't the M3 offer a 6 speed transmission?? If not, you could definately go with SMG II. Honestly, I would say go M, because once you do, you'll probably never be satisfied with anything else BUT an M!! Then, if the money is right, you could go for an M5 and definately be happy!!

M3 = Muy Bueno!!

I would wait a few months to see what the new 5 Series will be like before buying.

Yeah, this is very true. Perhaps a little less bothersome since you will be leasing this car and don't have to worry about selling it later on.

My vote would be for the M3. You have a 2 door already, so it seems you can live with one and dont necessarily need a door. The 540 is an execellent car, but most everything about it is dated, and going to be more dated pretty soon.

Having the M3 for the next 3 years will let you see what's to come of the 5 series and perhaps even dump out of the lease a year from now if you find the new 5 to be more fitting to your present life style.

Going from a 330ci to a 540 might leave you wanting a tighter handling ride, a 330ci to an M3, well, you're just taking what you have now and increasing everything nice about it.

My vote, M3, but not red, it will make too many people drool.

Good point, I guess the new technology and design on the M3 should worth the extra $5k. And definitely no red for me, the existing order I have is for a silver gray M3 coupe.

If I were you I would wait for the 2005 M5 which will have a V10 with around 550 HP. All that plus you can get laid in the back seats, something I would never try in my M3.

I'd say go with the 540i if you're no longer in your 20's or early 30's. That 540 just gives such a successful and magestic feel to it! And who cares about the last yr production style? Last yrs are usually the most problem free ones anyways. Not to mention that you're leasing it for 3 yrs only anyways.

I have never heard of a 540 with engine failure.... but get the M3 any way. Live dangerously.
