about to purchase a '95 525it at 146K miles.. should I not?

drove one today on the highway and literally fell in love with the car... Seriously thinking about purchasing one for the wifey (so that I can get to drive the ZHP more often ). Any experiences with these cars before?

people are reporting in excess of 200K miles some even close to 300K or more. The cost needed for it do so is another matter though..

There are a couple: One has 137K miles and $4,500+tax is what I could get it for (gold/tan). Other one has 146K miles for $3400+tax (green/tan). Both are '95. The one with 137K is a little cleaner.

I'm still in love with the E34 chassis. A friend had an 89 525i in high school, that car ran for over 190k miles with minimal problems.

If its clean and has service records, I'd say go for it! Hopefully I'll find an E34 M5 one day...

That is a good car. It has the M50tu vanos motor which is very reliable. Put an old school E34 Racing Dynamics Kit and wheels and it's game over.

S65: 4.0 Liter, V8, 414 hp @8,300 rpm, 295 lb/ft @3900 rpm, 445 lb, DOHC, 12:1 C/R, crankshaft 44 lb, wet sump.
2 oil pumps,double vanos variable valve timing, EMS: MSS60, 8 electronically controlled individual throttle butterflies.
4 valves per cylinder, cracked trapezoidal connecting rods, brake energy regeneration. Ion-flow combustion monitoring.

i had a 1995 525i and it ran pretty reliably but whenever anything needed fixing it was always over $1500. eventually i just sold it cause i spent as much repairing it as buying it. $5000.

The E34 was the last 5 series designed before the accountants took over. The 6 cyl versions are preferred if reliability is a concern. If you don't get 300k miles out of that car, you are doing something wrong.

it had 125,000 miles when i bought it. i owned it for 14,000 miles and in that time it needed a new thermostat, a new alternator, idle control valve and some other various parts.

12-13 years ago I saw Koenig tuned black E34 M5 in Czech and that's what sealed my love for BMW.
