just took a trip over there.. in manhattan try Cararcas, its an arepas bar.... sooooo good.. it was around NYU

Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill is good.

Nobu is a nice sushi restaurant.

Neither are really NYC specific, but good eats just the same.

but i doubt u can afford any of those if you're from canada... like a 3rd world country compared to the almighty USA

the modern for atmosphere
momofuku for noodles
eleven madison park/gramercy tavern/union square cafe for good food (same ownership group, but daniel humm is doing amazing things at eleven madison)
any of daniel boulud's places: daniel, cafe boulud, db moderne bistro for the foie gras burger

i could go on...
