Yes, that's how the module works, it's using a 60 second timer to do so. Timer starts when it receives power from ignition switched 12v. you can install a cutoff switch (push off/release on) in line with the switched 12v to "trick" the module to think that engine is not running anymore; this will reset the timer to 60 seconds again.

I also think you can just skip the ignition switched 12v supply, since the mirrors work with the always on power but I wouldn't recommend that, as you may accidentally press the fold button while doing 150mph

So no Relay or Zeiner Diodes needed here, they will be useless. If you leave the car and lock it (with remote or key in keyhole), if the mirrors are folded they will stay folded, if they are unfolded they will fold upon locking. When you unlock your car, mirrors WILL NOT UNFOLD (German Logic, u don't want to unfold your mirrors on a car that has come and parked very close to yours).
The tricky part here is, if you get in your car, unfold mirrors manually, turn on engine and drive away in less than 60sec, there will be a risk of your mirrors folding when you doors autolock at 20kmh. So be careful with that if you have the Autolock doors at 20kmh activated.

Thanks for your patience and hope it helps
can i tap both white and blue wire so that the mirror can fold up/down when i lock/unlock my car?

The door modules can be coded to do this without messing with the wiring

still trying to understand according to e46addicted's writing, the SAM module cant fold down the mirror when you unlocked the car because it only connected to the white wire, so basically im thinking what would happen if i connect the brown/red wire to both of white and blue it should do the fold up and down i think.. thats my thought.. but i dont know wether its safe or not

Hey there,

I got a question. The switch you are using is a ...689 with two connectors.

I just bought a switch with the part number 61 31 6 901 383 and it has only 4 pins in total in one connector only. The part information says I need a 61 31 8 373 732 for my car (no memory seats). What's the difference between als the switches and are they interchangable?

You mean mirror switch? Does the switch you bought have the fold button?

Yes, I mean the switch. But the one I bought got only one connector with 4 pins inside and it is purple. The one shown here is yellow and got two connectors with numerous Pins. So I guess I bought the wrong switch - don't know yet because I haven't removed the door panel yet (wanted to have all parts ready before I drive to the shop).
But what is it with all those switches? How are they different?

They are different because of the changes / options on the E46. Memory seats + auto dip function is one switch, facelift E46 with ribbon mirrors is another switch, mirrors with fold option another switch as well.

Various switches/Cigar lighter - BMW parts catalog

From what I see here, 383 is not the correct one as it is for cars with memory seats

Yeah, that's what I figured. I thought I could just put the Pins differently. But obviously not. So I just sell the switch and buy the other one at the dealer .

Where else can I buy a SAM Module?
They seem to be sold out on the innoparts website.
Its the only thing I need to do the retrofit.

Do you have memory seats? If so, just recode your existing modules. Like so:

Anyone know where I can get a SAM Module, or something similar?
Innoparts are no longer producing them.

eBay.

you have two choices

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ZMC-Auto-Fol...-/121003932537
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-Sm...-/111016438613

The appear to be the same device only inverted, however the ZMC one appears to have dip switches to select how they unfold, which the AER may not have.

Personally I want them to fold on ACC off, and manual unfold/fold via the button. This is because I have a tight garage and don't want auto unfolding.

These modules also appear to be a bit smarter, with code to stop the mirrors folding when driving and with repeated door operations.

However the schematic seems to show the need for two lines from the switch rather than the single momentary fold/unfold button the BMW uses, which would be a problem for retaining the original switch function.

I also had a browse through Alibaba and found the innoparts but the MOQ is 100 pieces. I didn't have time to investigate deeper.

Thanks for the above Arty. Yeh i noticed the same thing with the above modules.
All I want is to fold/unfold at the push of the button on the switch, so not sure if they will suffice.
