You don't really mention anything that accompany the SES light i.e. running rough, stalls, slow acceleration, lack of power etc.

You should get in touch with someone with a scan tool (indy/dealer/friend/autozone/) to read the fault code first and then post here so we can help you fix the problem that's causing the SES.

I agree , this is your first step. You need to get a code reader.
after you see what codes its giving you, you can start analyzing whats wrong.

Autozones in California doesn't offer the use of diagnostic tools anymore cause of some new law, so don't try them. I called a few of them around here and no luck.

get you a peak reset tool...doesn't cost but around 125-150 bucks,,,,well worth the money,,,i have a 2002 325i and i bought one a little while after the purchase of my car and it has served and saved me well,,it will tell you if you really do have a problem and it will reset your light...it will even reset the maint. light..the onlt thing i wish it would do that it doesn't is read the abs system,,,,it will not read into the screwed up braking system that is on these cars,,,,hope this helps,,,good luck,,,

ouch, that's up there. I was going to say, bring it over to an autozone close by here because they will lend the scanner. Find a local bmw shop and take it there. Depends on the place they might ask you for a couple of bucks to do it, but at least you get an idea what the problem is.
