Yes, 5w40 or 5w30 is recommended by BMW for your year car. However, 5w40 favors warmer temperatures. You can use 5w30 during winter, and 5w40 for the rest of the year. However, that also depends on how long your winters are, and how mild your summers are. You might be ok using 5w30 in Minnesota year-round, and 5w40 in Florida year-round.

I use BMW 5w30 oil during the winter months, then Pentosin 5w40 the rest of the seasons. I've got just over 122,000 miles and I'm located in Raleigh, NC.

I hope this helps.

Forgot one thing, the oil capacity if 6.9 liters, but don't add all of it at once. Add 6 liters, then check and add little by little. You don't want to overfill that M54 engine. It actually likes to be slightly below full on the oil deepstick.

Auteck you could be right but to me 6.9L sounds a little high. I remember reading 6.5 to 6.7. I cannot remember right now but search the forum or wait till someone else chimes. When I get home I will check my manual and let you know.

its on the owners manual. yes it is 6.9L. Most fanatics use mobil 1 0w40 or BMW castrol 5w30. Get whatever's cheapest from those two because they are more or less the same viscosity.

But ya, definitely start out with 6.25L, drive it a little and add oil until the level is exactly on the middle block of the dipstick.

Not true, it's 6,9 quarts, which equals 6,5l.

how do you guys get all the oil out?? i've been changing my own oil for years and i've never been able to refill with 6.5L or 6.9qt without overfilling. usually i can at best fill with 6.3 to 6.5 quarts--sometimes less.

Dip sticks have been known to be wrong. Maybe yours isn't reading correctly?
If you drain it from the pan and get all the oil out, it should take 7 qts OK.

Don't know, couple of possible explanations. Oil was a bit warmer to begin with because I had been running a few errands and then immediately started draining it (so not just a 5 minute warmup drive). Possibly because I was installing the LeatherZ oil distribution block which took f%@# forever, so it was really allowed to drain for several hours. And possibly because my measurement of 'to the drop' is not quite that accurate (or the Shell's measurement of 1l, for that matter).
However, I put 6 full cases and then close enough to one half in the engine. So I couldn't have been that far off.

Read the manual again. Both the grade/weight of oil required is in there as well as the capacity of your engine.

As you can plainly see, asking people on a message board yields some incorrect information.
