The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has revoked the trademark of the NFL's Washington Redskins, after ruling in a case brought by five Native Americans that the name disparages a minority. While the decision could have wide repercussions, it does not require the team to change its name.

In a statement about the decision, the the petitioners proved that "the term 'Redskins' was disparaging of Native Americans, when used in relation to professional football services, at the times the various registrations involved in the cancellation proceeding were issued."

As a result, the agency said, "the federal registrations for the 'Redskins' trademarks involved in this proceeding must be cancelled."

Explaining the decision's immediate effects, the agency said its review board "determines only whether a mark can be registered with the federal government (and thus gain the additional legal benefits thereof), not whether it can be used."

The trademarks in question date back to the 1960s and '70s. The Washington, D.C., team lost a similar trademark case in the late 1990s, only to have its registration reinstated by a U.S. district court in 2003. It is almost certain the team will appeal the agency's latest decision.

This is so stupid, I'm sure the Redskins organization will appeal it.... although, they might just end up changing the name.

Hello Washington Braves

This same sh!t went down in '99.

"Native Americans have won at this stage before, in 1999. But the team and the NFL won an appeal to U.S. District Court in 2009. The court did not rule on the merits of the case, however, but threw it out, saying that the plaintiffs didn't have standing to file it. The team is likely to make the same appeal this time."

Room & flight booked, tickets purchased. Will be entering enemy territory with my bro & dad for the 'Skins @ Dallas Monday Night game on 10/27/14. Hopefully I won't get shot while sporting my burgundy & gold.

now that they've gone 2-0 in the preseason, it's time to start declaring that this is the year the redskins are winning the super bowl, right?

Time to start celebrating now, right? It seems like the local media always starts going nuts this time of year

Yeah, pretty typical. Eh, just an indication of the area's passion for the team, despite their mediocrity over the past few decades.

Snyder's saying they're already planning to build a new stadium. FedEx was built in '97 and has one of highest capacities in the league. I get that in the NFL it's all about building the next, new stadium, but doesn't this seem odd?

when you can get other people (read: the city) to foot the bill, why not get a new stadium? A new stadium is definitely what this city needs to propel the Redskins to the Super Bowl.

Well hopefully they build it in NoVa rather than Maryland.

How about some pass plays that are longer than 2 yards? That'd be a start...and stop fumbling the ball. Was a winnable game. That said, JJ Watt is an animal. Wow.
