I recently fixed my rough idle problem and it ended up being the fuel filter, might want to try that next. GL

Got the new MAF in and installed this morning.

30 miles later and only an E4, Cb code. Too lean on bank 2 only. I'm at a loss for now.

How was your rough idle when it happens ? Does it happen when you leave your car idle for 5-10 minutes ?

I never sat in idle that long when it was happening but it was rough to the point where if i didnt keep the RPMs past 1K the engine would die.

I just got my car back last week and seems to be back to normal but here's a quick summary of my experience, hopefully it helps. GL

Symptoms
-Loss of power when accelerating, car actually seems to want to stall when shifting into 1St/2nd Gear
-Car dies if not revved past 1k RPM at start
-Engine sputtering ~3k-5k RPM at hwy speeds
-SES light on, all sorts of codes

Peak tool, Table 19:

E4 "Oxygen sensor adaptation limit, Cyl #4-6"
E3 "Oxygen sensor adaptation limit, Cyl #1-3"
C6 "Catalytic convertor efficiency, Cyl #1-3"
CA "Oxygen sensor control limit, Cyl #1-3"
F2 "Misfire detected, Cyl #5"
F3 "Misfire detected, Cyl #6"
F1 "Misfire detected, Cyl #4"
EE "Misfire detected, Cyl #1"
F0 "Misfire detected, Cyl #3"
EF "Misfire detected, Cyl #2"
41 Cam position sensor

Autozone:

P0171: System too lean (Bank 1)
P0174: System too lean (Bank 2)

Fixes, all parts OEM,(DIYs-Tischer BMW). I started off on DIYs since I still have a warranty(CARMAX) but it didn't cover any standard Maintenance items just major failures.

DIY's
-Replaced the Spark plugs, Air Filter, Cabin Filter - was doing this for regular maintenance, had no codes yet but the engine had already been sputtering
-All intake hoses replaced - First thing I changed when all the symptoms above started occuring. had a crack in the elbow tube and this fixed the stalling but still no power and SES light was still on
-Cleaned the MAF and tried seafoam - helped a little with power issue but the engine was still sputtering and was still getting engine codes but this was the first time the cam position sensor code came up(41)

SHOP - Turned it into the shop mainly because the failed parts it was pointing to were warrantied items
-Changed the intake cam position sensor - power was back but SES light was still on, 02 sensor codes
-Replaced the MAF - not sure how they came to replacing the MAF since i was expecting them to change out the 02 sensors from the last code scan that i did before turning it back in. Either way the SES light turned off, power is still there but engine rev past 3k was still sputtering
-Replaced the fuel filter and Software update - shop said the software on mine was out of date, the filter wasnt under warranty but the guy at the shop figured this out and eventually full power, smooth engine rev was the result.

I just replaced my exhaust side camshaft sensor cause it was faulty. Do you think its a good idea to replace the intake side even if it doesn't show up as faulty?

What exactly does the fuel filter do..

Your fuel filter also serves as a pressure regulator. One of the points missed in a lot of these diagnosis threads for this problem is that a lean condition can also be a result of a fuel shortage. Typically the only thing you read about is extra, unmetered air entering the intake through some form of vacuum leak.

Hard to say with this issue whether u should replace it but if your changing one might as well do the other if your working on your car already. not one thing seems to resolve this rough idle issue. As for the fuel filter I'm no mechanic but I assumme it cleans the fuel prior to getting into your engine along with its other functions so its one of those standard maintenance items like your air filter/oil fileter/cabin filter that needs to be replaced.

I would have done the DIY on the fuel filter but no codes were pointing me in that direction. I just overlooked it when I was doing my regular maintenance stuff, that and the fact that im a bit hesitant with messing with fuel related parts and not having ramps to get underneath the car was also an issue. now that i look back on the steps i took maybe doing the seafoam treatment might have had something to do with it since it went into the the intake system(MAF and intake cam sensor replaced) and my fuel tank(fuel filter replacement), hard to say now that everything is fixed.

this might help in the case you know your cars maintenance history and you can see if you missed any of the maintenance stuff...

I poured a can of Seafoam into the gas tank last weekend, last night my wife had my car out and called to say the CEL had gone off. Still showing the pending codes with the Peake tool (Cb, E4) but I'm hoping the injectors finally cleaned themselves out and the light will stay off.

Probably not going to get a lot of driving or work done in a hurricane though.

Since my last post the CEL has turned off. I haven't checked in a few days but the Peake tool said E4, Cb still but that was 500+ miles ago. Car runs like its almost had 2 grand thrown at it, which is good.

I'll try and get it inspected whenever things are back to normal here. Good news, only casualty of mine from Hurricane Ike was a lost window screen on my house and some food.

Figured I'd resurrect this thread versus starting another new one to confuse people searching for this huge pain in the ass problem.

Problem was "solved" for about 10 months or so. It has been intermittent ever since. When the CEL reappeared it was the same old codes on the Peake tool as before. E3, E4, CA & CB.

Initially the CEL came back on and I was low on gas, so when I refueled I added a full can of Seafoam to the gas tank. CEL turned off and stayed off long enough to pass Texas state inspection again.

Since passing the inspection the CEL has reappeared and I haven't bothered troubleshooting anymore or throwing anymore money at the very greedy car. What I have noticed is that on days when it is damp/raining outside the CEL disappears. For instance, if I leave the house and drive around while it is wet to say the grocery store...when I leave the store the light will have turned off. Drive home, park in garage, next time I leave the house and the roads have dried out the light will reappear. I don't know if this is just a coincidence or if there is some kind of leak in a line underneath the car that is being affected by the rain/grime from the road being slung around while wet.

I've read there are vacuum lines around the fuel filter that could leak which could cause these same error codes to appear on either this forum or BFC. I planned on replacing the fuel filter and getting underneath there to scope everything out. Be nice it after all this all I had left to replace was a hose.

It's directly underneath the drivers seat on the undercarriage.

Thanks, the search on this site is not very good. I've been using forums since the 90s
