I would stick with 225/40ZR18 up front. Reasons being that this is the "correct" size if you want to keep the overall diameter the same as stock. Second, it should definitely be more "fender rubbing" free than the 235/40ZR18 (although this shouldn't rub either). The 235/40 will give you slightly better grip though.

NOTHING LESS than 235/40ZR18

225 is not a wide enough tire for 8.5" wide rims. The lip will stick out farther than the sidewall.

If your wheels are 8.5" then you should go with 235x40's.. A 225mm tire is good on a 8" wheel but too small for a 8.5". I didn't do my homework and I put 225x40's on 18x8.5 Breyton Inspirations and the wheel sticks out past the tire. It's not that noticeable until you get up real close to the wheel...I'll be getting 235's on mine when the old tires wear out...The 235x40's will fit front and back with no rubbing... Here is a pic of my 00 323i sport.

would it be possible to put 235/40/18 on all four 18"x8" rims? i know 225 is the recommended but i figure the 235 would offer a little more rim protection... thoughts/experiences?

It would fit fine. 225s will offer some rim protection as well.

SO YOU THINK IT IS BETTER TO HAVE 235 ALL AROUND OR 235 FRONT AND BACK 245 . EVEN YOU LOWER YOUR CAR WITH H&R
