DIY: Nexus 7 2013 LTE Tablet in Dash

Recently I installed a Nexus 7 Tablet in my car and forgot to take pics of the process . I thought I should post this quick and dirty tutorial to help anyone who attempts this in the future.

Let's start with a video of the tablet so you can see how it looks/works.

Now the parts list (All items available on Amazon)

Double Din Bezel
USB Car Charger
USB OTG Cable
USB Hub
USB Wire
Right Angle Stereo Jack
BMW Business Radio (Radio with mode button)
Nexus 7 2013
Radio Aux Cable

Total ~$300

Tablet Configuration

1) Unlock bootloader on Nexus 7 & Root it
Follow this guide to do that

2) Setting up Fastboot drivers on your computer
You should follow this tutorial on how to setup fastboot and ADB on your computer. Once you have it set up you will need to send the command
Code:
fastboot oem-off-mode charge 0
This code allows the tablet to power on whenever it starts charging. This is useful in case the tablet dies while it is installed or you want to power the tablet down in case you don't drive your car for a while.

3) Flash ElementalX Kernal and Paranoid Android ROM
When you flash ElementalX make sure you select the USB Fastcharge and USB OTG Charging options.

4) Download Nova Launcher
Select the restore from backup option and use my backup for your settings.
Download link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/kuihjhvl3v...kup.novabackup

5) Download Wallpaper created by rxritalin from http://goo.gl/JihIBq (Post #18)

6) Download Desktop Visualizer App from Playstore
You use this app to create clear widgets on the home screen to launch your apps.

7) Download PowerEventMgr from Here

8) Download Tasker & taskkill

9) Setup a Taker profile with "Not Power Any" with these events

With these settings the tablet will go into a deep sleep when it loses power.

Dash Disassembly

I didn't document this part but you need to take almost everything out of the dash and make it look like this.

There are dozens of Tuts on how to get to this point.

Once you get to the radio you will need to remove it from the car and remove the face plate from it. I used these two videos to figure out how to remove the face plate

Once the face plate is removed you need to reinstall the radio into the car with the aux cable, reinsert the faceplate ribbon cable you removed, turn the car on and set the radio back to aux and take the faceplate back off. Now your radio should permanently be set to aux mode, unless your battery dies then you might have to reset it to Aux.

Now you just need to wire everything up according to this crudely drawn diagram

In the future I'll make a video on how to configure the tablet since that is most likely the most confusing part.

Wow! Congratulations! Just the other day I was thinking how could I do such a thing. How is the phone working? What is the setup?

Nice work.

Alternatively you can use one of these for the USB:

Can you do this with the Nexus 7 2012 model?
