always... if nothing else, provides a back up for the e-brake. I was always taught to pull ebrake, let the car adjust, then put it in gear

ps mike, next week might work for the ssk

I always put it in reverse when parked. Reverse is the lowest gear and will prevent the car from rolling if the parking brake fails.

My Ride: something
E-brakes on E46s are known to be weak and/or need to be tightened often. So yes, I always push my shift lever into gear no matter how it's parked. It doesn't hurt anything, and it's safer.

You learned wrong, there's no harm leaving it in gear and it provides a nice backup to the e-brake.

Was taught to put it in gear (1st or Reverse).

And like the others have, it's a good back-up to the ebrake.

Why wouldn't you put it in gear? That's just weird.

And 1st gear is lower than reverse numerically.

I put the e-brake on, let off the regular brakes to put the load on the e-brake, then put it in gear as a backup.

Exactly right. You don't wnat to let the car rest in gear but it is good in the event of a failure of the p-brake.

A side note. If you have an automatic you should always use the parking brake as well. All that is stopping your car from rolling is a little pin. If it breaks (and they do) then your car will roll roll roll away.

I only leave it in gear if its on a hill( as a back up if E-break fails) Cause if you just leave it in gear and no E-Break YOU PUT MORE STRESS ON THE TRANNY WHICH IS BAD.

Us manual tranny owners have probably all forgot the e-brake and had the car start rolling, but damn, that one takes the cake. You have to give the guy props for risking life and limb to save his car though Can't blame him for a high tailing it out of there after that catastrophe
