Well, I'm officially a bimmer hoarder. I just bought a 2001 530i/5MT M-Sport from a friend. Now I just need to get it from AZ to home somehow. Shipping rates are insane, so it looks like I'll have to fly down when I get a chance.

It would be, but I don't have the time at the moment, being my last semester before graduation, job changing, etc. Prob won't go get it until late November, which will be pushing it snow/winter wise.

Either way, can't wait!

Buy me a ticket/gas and I'll go for you.

Also, when you're on your way back you should consider going through New Mexico, into Texas, and then north to WI. This way you avoid all the mountain passes. Which, while they are epic in the summer, are terrible in the winter...

Hey now, that's my line! I've put at least 5000 miles on my 323 in the last 3 years helping friends look at/pickup cars all over the place.

That's what I was planning. It will have brand new summer tires when I pick it up, so snow is totally out of the question. Shipping the winter wheels and tires down there is >$150, and it NEEDS new tires so I'm just ordering a new set to his door. I'll chill out in Florida if I have to wait out a winter storm.

looks very clean! My experience with the e39 is that the only two issues that come up are:

1.) radiator, expansion tank, and hoses associated with cooling system may need to be replaced - it's pretty standard on these e39s for them to go out.

2.) the head gaskets have a tendency to seep oil as the car ages (I know this sounds like common sense with any car but it's more common with the V8 e39s). I spoke with my mechanic and he had a good bit of advice that when the head gaskets are replaced it is a good time to also replace the valve cover gaskets because if you don't it will create uneven pressure and force new leaks on the old gaskets that were not otherwise replaced.

Good luck buddy great car!

The 530i uses the exact same engine as the E46 330i,Z4 3.0i, Z4 3.0i, X3/X5 3.0i, etc, so all the same things apply. I've honestly never heard of any problems with the head gaskets. Valve cover gaskets, yes. Head gaskets no.

Picking it up in 2 days! I'll try to remember to post a picture or two on the way back.

Looks like I'll be doing a CCV job in a week or two. Burns oil like mad on hard accel and leaks onto the drip pan too. My last CCV was done in ~10 hours. Shooting for 5 or 6 this time around. Anyone else need a CCV replaced before winter too?

How many miles?

Tear apart the entire drivers side of the engine bay, liberally make use of plyers and whatever else to rip the old one out, proceed to wish you had tiny hands as you reassemble, bitch up, down, left, and right about the damn dipstick oring, and put it all back together.

Sounds extremely unpleasant. I just hit like 62,500 on my engine

It is. At that mileage, if you don't take short trips or granny it in the winter, you'll likely be fine for awhile. CCV issues crop up after 100k, usually after 140-150k, like my E39.

Any of you guys have any experience vinyl wrapping interior trim pieces or know anyone that does it in the Milwaukee area?

I'm thinking about doing it myself. Researched a little bit and I think I could pull it off. I'm just so sick of the wood trim.
