Weird "thump" noise switchin gears in the rear of my e46??

Hey guy's...On my 2000 328ci which I purchased used, I have been hearing a weird thump noise coming from the rear when switchin gear's sometimes and I have nooo clue what that is?? Even when putting the car in Reverse you really hear it. Ehh it is pretty hard to explain through text but hopefully someone might of experienced the same problem in the past. :Rear differential bushing (a.k.a. Rear clunk sound) u need to replace. REAR DIFFERENTIAL BUSHING IS VERY HARD TO REPLACE BY YOURSELF AND YOU NEED A LOT OF PATIENT. I RECOMMEND YOU TO SEND YOUR CAR TO THE SHOP.

OP just be sensible - good luck!

Is your car auto or manual ? In an auto, usually when you put it in Reverse the car's rear raises a bit because you are applying power to the opposite direction when shifting from drive to reverse. The same way when you go into "Drive" your car's rear leans a little downward a bit. Perhaps, your rear springs expanding from regular height to a slightly raised height..That is ..if..your car is auto...my car seems to make a gentle thump also.

My car is Manual...and I guess you can call it a clunking noise. Sort of sounds like my exhaust tips hittin my rear bumper or something everytime I go into 1st gear and so on...and Reverse is the same. It's always like I have to baby the clutch pedal to catch that perfect point for it not to do it. Idk,weird.

hard to tell the exact cause but you should inspect:
1. GUIBO "drive shaft flex joint"
2. rear subframe for cracks.
3. tranny mounts / engine mounts

Like others have stated, check these items:
1. GUIBO "drive shaft flex joint"
2. tranny mounts / engine mounts
3. Rear differential bushing.

I had to do all 3 on mine.

x10 on rear diff bushing. That big main one especially.

I used to hear a loud thump or knock whenever I'd go into reverse or vice-versa, changed that bushing (among others) and it is now gone.

Did you do it yourself or a shop? Either way how much did that run ya? How many hours of labor would that take also? thx

Also I have been driving with this issue for the past 2-3weeks. Will I eventually get stranded or anything? Just want to know so I feel a bit better. Never had this issue before in my 5series or z3..hmm
