- 11/02 build date
- Bought my car used with 20,xxx miles
- I did a fluid and filter change with BMW gear oil at 60,xxx
- ZF 5HP-19 Trans
- now have 72,xxx

No Problems

01 330cic 116k no problem...I think it depends on how you drive your car. If you floor it all the time, the tranny will go bad. But if you just drive normal, it should be good for a long time.

my tranny is nice and smooth still and i drive reasonably. my buddy has an 01 325i and he has a pretty heavy right foot and he had to do a decent amout of tranny work at 110K

Mine is 2001 E46 convert 325 cic 77k 2nd owner. how many of you have changed the trans fluid (self or dealership) and then had the trans problem? I've seen polls that kinda put the rate of failure around 15%... Wondering if failure after can possibly be due to wrong fluid?

BTW, called two BMW dealer service dpts and got the line "oh yours has lifetime. you don't need to change it." "no, i haven't heard of E46s having problems losing reverse gear" It was almost as if they were told to say that line.

Makes me wonder about the craftsmanship about these vehicles. I generally fix most things myself. and common E46 probs include water pump, window regulators, sub frame, and now this tranny. Are they well built? I generally drive my cars into the ground. My Fords go 150-200k plus and I keep very good mechanical care. Can i expect that from my 2001? or are they prone to failure, which is a little surprising as 3Series has been around for awhile.

2001 330i w/ 117k miles, appears to be original tranny. I changed the tranny fluid myself at 113k.
