Cool Front Ashtray Conversion to Non-smoking Storage Tray

I bought my '04 vert last year and it did not have a front ashtray at the time. I just got the OEM part for the non-smoking package and tried to install it last night, but it wouldn't fit. It looks like there's a little plastic piece that sticks out around the small light (that's not working by the way) that's preventing it from sliding all the way into the opening. I could either attemp to remove the piece or modify the little tray. Has anyone modified the non-smoking storage tray so it will fit into the smoking package ashtray compartment? Thanks!!!

Asthray - Eurotray non-smoking photos

Here are the pics of my problem. The part number is 51168208369. The arrow in the first picture shows where the plastic piece covering the light bulb prevents the euro tray from fitting in the opening. Has anyone modified one of these? Do I try to modify the tray or try to break off that plastic piece? Any ideas? Thanks!!!

Would it help if you filed that edge off flush with the plastic "bump" closer to the front of the opening?

Looks doable to me just need to go for it and start cutting.I have the ashtray and since seeing the "no smoke part" i will probably buy one to do the same as you.

non-smoking tray conversion with illumination

I ordered one of these non smoking trays without doing my research and found this thread after realizing it wasn't just a "drop in".

I dremeled the little piece of plastic to gain extra clearance needed to drop it in. Then I drilled a hole with a 3/8" bit and used a dremel to make it the appropriate shape to snap in the window from the ashtray. Wasn't very difficult, just need to go slow and check frequently to make sure you don't take off too much.

The led does stick out a bit too far, but it can be coaxed a little bit to make the new tray fit. Overall, I'm very happy with the result and am glad I went to the trouble to keep the lighting. Now I just need to get a non smoking lighter plug.

I believe it's 51-16-0-141-037 - Stopper plug-in socket

02e30e46, I followed your instructions exactly and it worked like a charm. My storage package conversion is now complete with both front and rear ashtrays replaced with storage package parts with the red LED illuminating the front tray, and it even has the little plastic window. For good measure I went ahead and replaced the cigarette lighter with the non-smoking plug. Thanks for your tips!

Thanks for the kind words!

It was a pretty easy little project that got me started. Just finished my bixenon retrofit, which was a bit more challenging...

Alternative:
Hope op doesn't mind me using his pictures, but my interior is pretty much the same. Picked up a momentary switch from Radio Shack. Profile fits perfectly into the cigarette hole. It serves as a garage opener for me because my car wasn't equipped with the UGO

Design and built Not all that hard really. Sourcing the OEM Z8 push button was a pain though (as I didn't want to pay the $150 or so that the dealer wanted for it)

The main difference is the lack of a "cigarette holder", so you can use the whole opening. And it is a nicer material on the inside - if that makes a difference. Mine looks exactly like Danoff's above with the plug.
