We're sponsoring a 24 Hours of LeMons team

A group of crazy friends is building a LeMons car for next season. The donor car is an E30 318 with heavy rear end damage. They have a group of fairly seasoned drivers, a couple of experienced mechanics, and a cool sponsor. I think they'll do just fine.

Check out their blog - now featuring a video of the recent body work done with a backhoe. Quite impressive.

If you're looking for an E30, monitor the surrounding BMWCCA chapters. There always seems to be something good popping up.

I plan to participate at their targeted event as a crew member. I've read too many stories about these events not to take part in one at some point. This is a good bunch of guys, all with BMW or Porsche club experience.

We finished this portion of cage work in about 6 hours spread across two nights last week.

Main hoop just about ready to come out of the bender

The hoop is just wedged into the car so its sitting crooked in this photo.

Base plates for the main hoop will be plinths. We'll knock them out to gain access for welding the halo bar then wedge them back in to finish weld the feet. The front plane of the plinth will be boxed off with another plate. We will also reinforce underneath the plinth to prevent collapse.

I made the plates from 8" wide 11 gauge (.120") steel chopped to length and bent in a brake at work. A cardboard template was made to determine final shape. The plates were trimmed to near final dimension with a plasma cutter and finished with the plasma or a grinder as needed.

Diagonal is in. The small pieces of plate between the main hoop and b pillars are tacked there only to hold the hoop in position. We will eventually add real gussets there.

Note that we clearanced the inner roof structure with a 3lb hammer which allowed us to get the main hoop higher and wider for head room. The hoop is essentially touching the roof.
