My Ride: want to drive e46
Under car growling/rumbling noise on 330xi

Hi all, this is my first awd bmw ( I had 330ci and e36 m3 ). Now , I have this low pitched growling/rumbling noise that I can hear at all speeds after 20mph all the way to 80mph. It is not very obtrusive , but I can hear it. It does not sound as loud as when my bearing on the e36 m3 was going bad. I wonder if it is because of the extra drive train to the front? I had Mitsubishi Montero Sport as well and when I engaged the 4wd it sounded like that , but this noise is louder that the one on the Montero. I doubt that BMW awd system is louder than Mitsubishi's. Anything that I need to check and rule out. PPI consisted of picking up the car on a lift and checks underneath and test drive , but the mechanic never said anything about that rumble/growl noise.
I am used to my 330ci and even e36 m3 being very quite and somehow bugs me that this one is not so much. Perhaps I have to become used to that extra drive shaft underneath the driver turning the front wheels?

Update on the problem for future reference

Problem with the noise resolved. Found low rear differential fluid. Fluid was drained and differential refilled with gear oil.
Thanks for your help and suggestions.
