SMG potential problem

I've driven many MT sports car but this is the first SMG car...

I have an 06 vert and I noticed lately that on 1st off the block and on 2nd there's a sort of fluttering before it engages, like it's not smooth going from 1st to 2nd. It's not as noticeable from 2nd to 3rd.

Wondering if other guys with SMG get this as well....

My 03 SMG with 44K has been doing something similar but only in first gear on take off. I don't know what it could be.

I should ad that my 06 only has 19k on it and it's still under warranty. But I don't wanna run to the dealer like a lunatic if it's something that's completely normal and characteristic of an SMG transmission...

It's hard to explain what it does, it's like a slight fluttering quick delay and when it engages then it's fine...

My old '04 used to do that same thing but it was pretty random in occurence. I had it in for service once and asked them about it and to check it out. When I went to pick up the car they said that they test drove it and didnt experience the problem and left it at that. I didn't really push the issue since it was a lease and under warranty. Never did find out what that was but it never gave me any probs otherwise.

It's like a hesitation when the clutch is engaging in 1st gear when taking off. It does several little hesitations until you get above a certain RPM and it becomes fully engaged. Reminded me of what a slipping clutch feels like in a MT car. When you said fluttering I knew right away what you were talking about lol

Also just remembered that it would only do it if i babied the throttle on take off. If I got on it say more than 1/4 throttle it wouldn't do it or I didn't notice it cos it was engaging too quickly.

Yep...that's what it is. I'll ask my dealer if that's normal or something that needs to be looked at...

My car does that too, but it only happens when I lightly hit the gas. When I put it straight down, it engages instantly and takes off.

I guess it's an SMG thing...

I just don't want my warranty to run out and then something happens...

Make the dealer address it and give you feedback on what causes it, etc. Then let us know what happens

I have an 04 M3 w/ SMG and I have the exact same problem. Hope someone can figure this problem out. It's pretty annoying.

It is the clutch engaging. It happens to me after a long day of sitting in bumper to bumper stop and go traffic. Change the shifting indicator to a more aggressive shift pattern (like from 3 where I keep mine to 5) and take off hard a few times. It'll get better. That's what I do anyways ..... and it works for me.

Man im so happy I didnt have any smg problems. I sometimes think if I did the launch control if it would really mess it up.

Howdy all...just got my '05 ZCP w/14k miles back from the dealer after taking it in for this problem last week under warranty. I described it as a one-cycle 3 Hz pulse that feels like the little dude who lives in the SMG box depresses the clutch pedal 3 times in one second while the clutch release valve is dumping the clutch pressure. Happened about half the time and could only slightly feel it in in the seat. Never happened during rapid accel from stop, just during slow accel. SMG reset did not have any effect.

Dealer duplicated gripe and sent in a Puma report. BMW NA came back with "a normal condition of the SMG". I told them I thought the lead SMG engineer would not be impressed...and to please dump the latest SMG software in (requested after reading about how many ills have been cured by the latest version). They did a shift learn/clutch map off the GT1 and BMW NA allowed the latest and greatest to get downloaded. Only put 15 miles on car since and I did not notice any 'flutter' or pulsing.

And the good news...alcantara wheel getting replaced under warranty for wear. Woo Hoo!

Hope this helps-

~John

Is it true you if your under warranty and your smg is toast, they will replace it? They give you one more transmission `
