850CSi vs E46 M3?

BWM E31 850CSi:

4,100lbs
5.6l V12
380hp/550Nm
190+ mph

BMW E46 M3

3,200lbs
3.2l I6
333hp/365Nm
170+

Cant seem to find any videos with these two running.

Freeway seems like the V12 would destroy the I6 at 100+

Input is welcome

I don't know who'd win, but I'd take the E31

I seem to remember the 850 being a dog compared to the M3...

The base 850s are slow, like the 850i and ci. Those had regular V8's.

providing the driver knows how to "drive" the car, the M3 is faster from 0-60 as well as the quarter mile. One of my client's son, has an 850csi, and I got to check it out. The thing is a boat and far from nimble- I can see why BMW never really got anywhere with them.

the csi, did 0-60 in the upper 5's and the quarter mile in about 14 seconds flat- nothing too crazy or spectacular, when compared to more modern cars.

heres a nice video with a younger Jeremy Clarkson testing the car.

Assuming your stats are correct:
The 8 carries 10.79 lbs per hp. The M3 carries 9.61 lbs per hp. Although torque and gearing are very important in a drag race, that kind of weight:power gap is pretty tough for any car to make up. My bet would be the M3 would be quicker.

I'm not sure an 8 series can go 190+. What's your source for that info?

I sure if you had a professional driver as well as being on a track you could hit over 190mph.

An excellent tourer and cruiser. But NOT a racecar by any measure. The E46 M3 will blow away even an 850CSi.

Take it from a former owner of an 840Ci and an E46 M3 coupe. I've driven a CSi...and I know the E31 in and out.

I doubt I will actually purchase one.. I want something that will take my M3 and the M5 on the road. I'm also leaning towards force induction E46 M3. Dunno yet. Both of mine are on the market btw.
