m20 turbo build thread, 56k go home

Just so you guys know why I haven't been making any crack-headded responces or threads lately.... I've had a new project that I have been working on lately.

It's being built for a friend. He wanted a 300+ hp turbo 4dr e30 that can be driven daily except for when it's raining.

I know this isn't an e30 board and that I'd get more responses and criticism from e30tech or r3vlimited, but that's not what I"m looking for. Plus, they b1tch about everything even more than you guys do. I just wanted to remind you that old man m20 still has a few tricks up his sleeve and hopefully motivate those who've been contemplating a project.

This thread isn't to argue specs, my method of assembling a motor, what you'd do if you had an unlimited budget versus what I'm doing or anything like that. This thread is just to show the progress of my build and get some vids up in a couple months after I get this car running. I'm not listing prices either. Just know that the engine, parts, turbo, piping, and machine work is estimated to be $6k.

I'm not rich, unemployed or work for my parents so updates will not come daily. I work on this car maybe 1-2 days a week.

Hope you guys enjoy the thread and pictures

That cross hatch and crouched old man Caught a corner of a Ferrari 575m exhaust This is going to be an s-eta build, low compression. Should be near 8.0 to 1 cr. Owner wanted boost after 3500 rpm so he wouldn't teeter between boost and no boost at cruising speed. If you've driven a turbo car, you know how obnoxious it can be.

3-angle valve job

Bare awaiting custom spec camshaft.

ARP head studs. Donor m20 on the right, and future project m50 on the left

Assembled. Yes, port and polish the exhaust, ported the intake.

Another assembled shot.

Low impedance action

OE style, but they flow just alittle more

Over size headgasket

Yes, those are 1000cc injectors.

Nice shot, worked on the valve cover a bit.

Just another shot. The sun kinda ruined it. The tan car on blocks was going to be the vehicle we were using. Now it's a donor/parts car.

A shot of the back side

Well it's late as sh1t and I'm goin to bed.

akb4: LOL I didn't take a pic of the whole process bro. Honestly though, it's not going to vary much from what the Bentley manual tells you.

dream: hot tanked and blasted.

akb4: I'll be either rebuilding my 2002 or building an m50 turbo e30(or doing both but not at the same time) in the next few months after this one is finished. Since this one is already assembled, I'll try to photograph and describe the next engine build as much as I can on either one for you :p

Wes: Thanks man

So much work for an old M20, why didn't you go with M50/S52? Cool project

I tried to convince the guy that the m50 will be a much better build. m50 with m52 328i factory forged crank with custom rods and pistons, custom cams and if he'd let me build him an intake manfold to go with all that but it would cost him too much.

or hell, just a stock m50 with s5x cams, thicker head gasket, injectors and a good tune should handle 400hp NO PROBLEM at all, and we wont have to worry about rockers since it wont have any.

we considered all the options and he had his mind stuck on m20 turbo. either way, anything over 250hp is pretty crazy on an m20. these cars are FISHY with the lsd. traction will be a huge obstacle with the current build.

I may just build my own e30 after this car is done

Coco: I was thinking about mentioning that I don't mind doing maintenance/repair work to BMWs and most non-domestics for the local guys, on the weekends.

Tuition/books are expensive and I'm trying to avoid taking a school loan.

Simsimma: Same here, it'll be my first turbo build and I'm real excited about blowing this one up.

How feasible would a turbo setup be on a M52 E46? I'm guessing there's already exhaust & intake manifolds made for the M50 that you can adapt for the E30?

From what I understand for the E46, the bottleneck is the lack of support...you'd have to go custom manifolds and even after that you'd have to find someone to tune it.

Well it wouldn't be very different than any car to set up a basic kit. The real problem lies within trying to tune the factory DME. Supercharger kits are working well because it's a gradual increase in meterable air and it's easier to compensate the fuel for that additional air. The gradual increase in air is also basically the same at any given RPM where as on a turbo it can fluctuate.

I've only heard of one person with a turbo m52tu e46, it's a silver car on the e46psi.com site and seems like he has a greddy emanage system controling his afr.

The factory intake manifold should be fine to use, even in high horsepower applications. There are many e36 with 500-1000 hp with the factory intake manifold. There is an e36 328i on bimmerforums that was running 700hp on his basically stock engine, besides a mls headgasket, injectors and proper tune.... before he went all custom trying to break 1000hp. Has videos too, it's a maroon car.

Exhaust turbo manifold on the e45 m52tu... Honestly I dont know, there just any info on what has been or can be used. Personally, I think the SPA manifold made for the e36 should fit..

Also, I just don't remember. My orig plan though was to fabricate my own manifolds and have my uncle weld them together for me. bimmerforums, r3vlimited, and e30tech is a good place to search for that info. I think for the n/a m50 e30 builds, they're just using the regular intake and exhaust manifolds. The turbo builds, some use the factory intake manifold, but I don't remember what aftermarket exhaust manifold they use.

I'm a big fan of doing as much of it myself rather than buying after market.
